Snook, Reds, and an angry Porpoise (06/22/19)

Post by Mudfish » Sun Jun 23, 2019 12:37 pm

I launched around 8:00 AM during a rising tide. Artificials only today. I worked my way down the creek slinging Gulps and a Super Spook. Finally found some Reds in a creek mouth between some oyster mounds. I caught three Reds including two slots at that spot, but was soon chased off by an angry Porpoise. I guess I was in “his” spot.

It was getting windy and some dark clouds were building, and I had a nice Red in the cooler, so I started working my way back to the launch. I cast a Gulp Jerk Shad up into a spot between an oyster mound and some tree branches, felt a solid thump so I set the hook and a 29 inch Snook went airborne. I fought it most of the time with my rod tip in the water and that kept it from jumping very high. It made numerous runs and explosions on the surface, but it finally got tired enough to net. I took a couple quick pics and released it. Glad to see the Snook population continuing to rebound in a our area, and my catches are consistently getting larger.

Snook near Jax? I used to live on the gulf coast and fished for them all the time. Haven’t caught one in years.

Hey Mudfish.......CONGRATS on getting those reds and that GREAT N.E. FLA snookie....29" is a BIG one for this far north!! I have never caught one that big, even down in the everglades near Chocoloskee.
Interesting trick to lower your rod tip into the water...never heard of that one!!

Strange to be "attacked" by a porpose!!! "Flipper" went crazy, huh??

Thanks for the great report and pix....JohnYaksJax

Thanks, John!
Let me know when you can fish on a weekend and we'll see if we can find some more big Snook. Seems to be plenty of them around, and populations are increasing. Keeping the rod tip below the surface to stop them from jumping so much has helped me get them to the net.

stallardjrs,
I catch Snook fairly often here in NE FL, and they seem to be on the increase in numbers and size.

Nicely done.
A mad porpoise... not something you see every day.
Cheers.
