Redfish, Black Drum, etc (06-02-19)

Post by Mudfish » Mon Jun 03, 2019 11:39 pm

I launched around 9:30 AM on Sunday. I knew it was going to be breezy, but I didn't think the rain would arrive as early as it did. I got a little wet and was chased off the water early by dark clouds and thunder, but still managed to catch at least a dozen and a half fish. The Redfish bite was decent, but the Black Drum bite was very good. I caught quite a few lower slot Black Drum, and a mixed bag of small Croakers and Sheepsheads. Saw one small Tripletail drift by my kayak, and a group of wild Hogs near the ramp. Brought one Redfish home for the grill.

Nice Job!

I've only seen hogs in Jax once off of JTB and Kernan, kind of blew my mind because I had no idea we had them here (I'm from Indy).

I went out early Sunday as well but only ended up with a flounder.

Do you mind me asking what setup you are using? Specifically the name of the hook and soft plastic.

Thanks!

Thanks, SlotEnthusiast !

LOTS of Hogs around here.

Congrats on the Flounder. I found some on a previous trip and will be targeting them on my next trip.

I mostly use Gulp Swimming Mullets on a jig head, or Gulp Jerk Shads on a weighted hook.

When targeting Black Drum, I like to use a Drop Shot rig with a Kahle hook and a swivel sinker. It doesn't get hung up much, and helps to avoid the bottom feeder trash fish.

Thanks, John!

I bought some Owner TwistLock weighted hooks (1/16 oz & 1/8 oz) from ABT about a month ago. If you can't find the weighted hooks with the centering pin already attached, you can buy packages of "Soft Plastic Centering Pins" and attach them to any hook. I bought some from West Marine a couple years ago and still using them.

Thanks for the pictures and info! I still have yet to catch a black drum. However I just got a friend to tell me about his money spot that is not too far from my place. So I'm going to give that a try this week or next. Ill post pics if I catch anything!

Thanks, Clark! I'll be fishing in your area in a few weekends. Maybe I'll see you there. Got a couple other creeks to hit first.
