Ocean Kayak Ambush

Just thought I would share this. Moved to Fernandina Beach this past year. I decided to take up fishing and have been fishing around the island. Recently bought a Ocean Kayak called Ambush. It's somewhere between a kayak and a canoe. I have added a few additions to include non-skid, rod holders, a hatch for storage/ice chest/live bait, anchor trolley, etc. Still want to get a fish finder and seats. Found out today that my sorry/cheap idea for a paddle holders did not work out very well, also found out a extension paint pole does not work as a stake pole today. Anyone want to give this new guy some advice where to launch this thing in the Fernandina Beach area and to go fishing at let me know.

Next additions will be some seat pads, fish finders and an actual kayak paddle versus these canoe paddles.

To be truthful, there are not that many launches on Amelia Island. You have downtown marina, 14th Street boat launch, Leaders & Sinkers boat ramp...... Most of the water access around Amelia is privately owned. Head on down Heckshire Drive as there are lots of launches available.

thanks, one thing with this kayak it is is a heavy one, 100 lbs with nothing on it. I saw that heading to Mayport for some work. I will have to go check out before dragging everything that way. any recommended areas to go putting around that side of the island?

I like your boat! Looks a lot like some of the duck hunting boats that I've seen. I'm a canoe fishing guy myself, so this kind of boat has a lot of appeal to me. Good luck with the hobby -- the Jax area is a great place for small vessel fishing! You definitely found a great site to get all the info, too!

I have the yellow version. I built a cool seat and replaced the front one. I'm outta town til Sunday but I'll share more later. This kayak has to be launched and I came up with a way to put just about everything in with one trip.

we have two custom boat seats built onto a back board, a scotty rod holder in the front( which i just bought the triple rod rail for it), two scotty rod mounts in the back, rod holders on the side of the boat for the paddles and anchor pole while fishing, and an scotty anchor system in the back just to keep us from moving at all. We keep adding stuff monthly to it, fish finder is next.

I fish alot, but mostly Mondays. If you ever have some time on a Monday PM me.

Haulover creek might be good for that set up as you can drive right down to the water.

Outback pretty cool set up, so you don't use a trolling motor? When I bought kayak it came with a grappling anchor but I had no luck with setting it yesterday. It slowed us down but slowly dragged. I like the paddle holder set up. I just attached by Velcro but found out that it is to hard and time consuming to reattach it.

I use some chain with a grappling hook anchor in the front, and a mushroom anchor in the back , and that holds us just find no matter where we try and anchor. It just depends on how far we go if i use the trolling motor.

Wow...that sure is an interesting way to use a spine board.

I am pretty sure that my Toyota Sienna wot work very well in the sand.

That boat is an interesting design. Years ago Roland Marin did a show promoting it. At the time I was in the market and ended up getting my 13' Grumman instead since it was half the weight. I like that back board seat setup, great use of space and looks very comfortable.

I want to put a 2hp on mine so bad but not sure the shaft will fit. I keep thinking about selling it and get a waterquest as well because I want to be able to get to spots faster. Any ideas? Coleman has a 2.6 that might work.

Not knowing a lot about engines, what type of speed difference do you think you will get with 2 hp versus one of the trolling motors. I have a 40lb thrust right now and i am wondering how much more would it be able to handle later on.
