I am brand new to fly fishing, but have been hitting my spots at UNF where I know there are fish to gain some confidence. Also, I picked up some nasty lizards today. Going to try to find some beds and taunt some mommas!

This is a pic of my first bass on the fly rod, caught last week:

That one was from shore....but the sup fly casting is next...I have my eye on the slayer propel 10 so that may happen soon.

Fly casting on a sup isn't bad at all and I really enjoy mine as a fly fishing platform...I've caught some of the UNF bass from mine and there are plenty of nice bass to be had out there!

That's a cool shot :-) Now posting your fishing spot with a background....Not sure if that's such a good idea ;-)
In case you haven’t noticed, there really are some enormous and enormously fragile egos in fishing. I can tell you that having a big ego is like owning one of those huge dogs that crap on the floor and eat the couch if they don’t get constant attention.

I remember some years back giving some lunchtime fly casting lessons to JYJ on a couple small ponds close to my (then) office. We were just goofing off chucking a black clouser so John could get the feel of it. Much to our surprise we caught some small bass! :D

Andy....my first lesson with my "new" (to me) flyrod produced my first catch....You got me "hooked" that day!! Thanks....John

PS: Just bought a new outfit up in NC...a brand new TFO Lefty Kreh II 6' 3 Wt. and a TFO BVK wide arbor Size 2 reel....with backing and RIO line and hard carry case....got a very nice deal and need to get it out and get it slimed!! Primarily for F/W trout, and smallmouth and Roanoke bass up in NC....

I'm sure you could have fun with it in plenty of ponds around Jax John... ;)

Andy....yes, that would make "practice casting" with it fun....just like your "lesson"....

I was also thinking of trying to catch a shad with it....dunno if I would be "under-gunned" but I have never caught one....wonder if they are still running in the St. Johns??
Anyone in here know that answer....Rich, Scott, others....????
Thx...JYJ

JYJ, guess I can't give you the business over that toy fairy wand you got since I now have a 6' 6wt...also destined for some of those small waters to the North.

I found some more bass on poppers last night.....8 bass total, all turning on from 6:15p-6:45p...5-6 there were no fish.

jptrout....Yes, it is smaller than I really should have for down here, but I need to give it a try!! It should be perfect for wading small, tight creeks/streams on my trips to NC tho......good to know that I am not the only "fairy wand waver".... thanks for the encouragement!! LOL!!

jbond352...Are those ponds "publicly available"? I know the ones near Blue Cross and BOA are pretty "secure" and don't know about UNF ones....Thanks!!

All the ponds at UNF are open to fish...but you have to use artificial and you have to practice catch and release.

Here is one of my favorite ponds (behind hicks hall). Lots of BIG carp are in this one.
