David and the Captain

Ramona and I had been married a bit over a year when I first met David Hopkins. He was a 7th grader at Turner Middle School and in that school year of 1974-74 I became their new PE Teacher/Basketball Coach. Ramona and I have now been married a bit over 45 years, so it has been a while since those early days in the gym.

David and I have been connecting via Social Media for some time now and today we finally were able to get together. After the 2-hour drive over from Metro-Atlanta, David and I met at the Eatonton Huddle House. Two hours later we walked out with David’s ears missing. They had to be because I honestly believe that I talked them off. I couldn’t help it. I get excited when I have company.

They say that time stands still for no man and that applies to today’s guest as well. Since our first meeting David has accumulated a lovely wife, four children and two sons in law. Along the way he has also garnered almost a quarter of a century with UPS. But (change of direction) today he was that 12-year-old boy again as he boarded a long canoe with a tall man, a short and loving dog, a cup of worms and a trusty cane pole.

For several hours we talked about our past, our families and our faith. We spoke of lessons learned and shared about things that really matter. It was one of the finest days that I have experienced in quite some time. A teacher can have no greater reward than to be remembered and cared about for such a long time.

David and I paddled to the Old Bridge and beyond. We fished Clyde’s Cove as well as the base of Hampton’s Hill. David caught 12-15 Bream which was just enough to bait up the trotline that I sometimes run off the corner of the Dachshund’s Dock.

Not only that but we also took some time to create a short video for your viewing pleasure. I’ve had some great days on the creek but today was indeed a humdinger. We hope that you enjoy the following video!
