I took my step on out today to chase some tarpon and kings in Ponte Vedra. It was his first time in the ocean on a kayak, so I was basically along for the ride and making sure he was good. He is 15.

We saw the tarpon crushing the pogies before we even launched.

We set off and caught some livies with a sabiki rig. (just snatching it through the pod) I looked up and noticed that we drifted a good 1/4 mile down the beach, which I hadn't experienced in the brief time that I've been kayak fishing in the ocean.

Tarpon were everywhere. Airing, crushing topwater, rolling. It was insane.

We tossed our live pogies into the pods using a large cajun thunder cork. Unfortunately, we weeded through a lot of sharks, and a storm chased us off after about an hour of fishing with the action still hot. Catching sharks is the price you have to pay to get to the silver king, and I'm sure we would have got one if we had more time, but we still had a great time on the water and I learned some new things.

We had a long paddle back north as the current was brutal. I found that surprising as the wind and waves were both calm. Let me know if you have any pointers!

Awesome! It's not always about the catch you get, but the time you get together! Can't give advise on that kind of fishing, but hope you two had fun!

Hello joelwinters and thanks for the input about fishing BTB....Beyond The Breakers.
You learn every time you head out there, and I would guess you will head into the current and/or wind to make your return to your launch easier!!

Please keep us posted on your quest for a Silver King aka a tarpon!!
