I've been banning and deleting a lot of them but, frankly, it's overwhelming at the moment. I've tried contacting the guy who looks after the technical side of the site, who is based in CA, but not had a response. It's mostly the Off Topic forum which is being hammered. I've managed to keep on top of any stuff that strays into other forums. Just been away for a week with no access to the site though and it has really built up. As I understand it from the site settings, new users have to respond to an email to confirm their membership. There is no actual approval process in use at the moment. What that does is stop the automated bots etc creating profiles and posting, but if actual people are involved it doesn't stop all of them. If you look at the Members list and sort it by date joined (click on the column heading) you'll see plenty with dodgy user names who haven't posted so the current process seems to be stopping some of them.

What we need is intervention from a higher power right now!

I've run several forum based sites like this, and by far the easiest way to virtually eliminate drive-by spam posts like these are to require the first 2-3 posts of every new user to be approved before showing up on the board. Yes, it requires a little more time from the admins/moderators, but it's a lot easier to look in a single message approval queue than it is to scan an entire forum manually for spam messages. The phpBB software used on this site definitely has this feature.

Well, all the rubbish stuff has been removed. Our "super-admin" got in and did the necessary. He's also tightened up the new user registration process so hopefully that will improve things. Might be a bit of hangover from "users" (I use the term loosely :?) already registered but we can get rid of them on an ad hoc basis. This morning I canned a user and their 167 threads in the Recipes forum! All very easy when there is just the one idiot.
