Not fishing [elk hunt]
I just got back from a solo DIY elk hunt in New Mexico. I had good luck and arrowed a nice bull at 42 yards. It was a good hit and he ran less than 100 yards. Cutting him up and hauling the meat out of the woods by myself was brutally hard.

GREAT NEWS, CLARK!!!
I am excited for you and knew you really wanted one this year....and we chatted about it at the last Happy Hour!!! Congrats!!!
How far was the portage to get the meat and that great rack back to civilization???
That will keep you fit and in shape....and I am happy that you got one!!
Cannot wait to chat again...LOTS of questions about packing out the flanks and the head and rack..is that the "cape"....???
Congrats again.....John

Thanks guys. John, originally I was parked about a mile from where he fell, but thanks to four wheel drive and skid plates, I was able to drive to within a few hundred yards of him. Steep terrain and fallen trees made it a tough haul though.

Get yourself a skedco and winch with 500 yards of synthetic cable and you wont have to worry about those hauls again.Clark wrote:Thanks guys. Shawn, that is so impractical I don't know where to begin.
Just wouldn't work. Too much elevation change and too many fallen trees.
