First time poster, long time lurker. I’m ready to make the jump from the shore to the yak. I’m looking for some help on which kayak would be best for me. For starters I’m 6’2 260 pounds or so so I’m looking for something stable that is ready to fish and won’t require too many mods from the get go. The ability to stand up will certainly be a plus along with an “in the box” comfortable seat. Plan on doing your basic flats/creek fishing in Browns/Sisters/Simpson creek and Dutton island. Working with a budget of $800-1000, cheaper the better obviously. Any suggestions? Once I get in the water I would love to hook up with a few of you guys to do some fishing. I got a 4 month “vacation” (paternal leave offered by TIAA!, GO JAGS!) from work coming in a few weeks.

Here's a link to a used one I spotted last week.

We're about same height and weight. Several of your stated needs paralleled mine.

I went w a used Hobie PA after a deluge of research, so I'm kind of partial to them. Others may well be partial to other brands, such as Predators, Slayers, etc. etc, for their own excellent reasons.

I grew up around their sailing catamarans; I couldn't beat 'em, nor afford 'em. (I still can't!).

I couldn't out-think their designers then, nor now. All designs are clever, rock-solid, and often over-engineered.
They tend to hold their value. I justified mine as (ahem) "An Investment". :smoke:

Biggest disadvantages I've found are:
- Price -- duh. Too darned much. Hobie Marketing strategy will never prompt anything other than the "High Price, High Quality" quadrant. Hasn't changed in 50 years, and never will.

- Weight -- I think they're "lead sleds". Good luck trying to car-top a 140-lb PA;
P/U truck or trailer, or be prepared to "Strip your gears" or stave in your car's roof, or rack, or both.

Regardless: any movement away from Shore-side is "A beautiful thang".

That's my $.02. Good luck !

I forgot this one...
also pretty sweet.
Note the thickness of that "H"-bar: solid!

I saw some newfangled contraption, I think on "JaxKayakFishing.com" straight out of China,
that was apparently trying to enter the US market, while seeking to copy a few features.

It was white; the stern split into 3-pieces for stability, and it showed a "Stand-up H Bar".
It peaked my interest for about 2-minutes, until I honed in on the thickness of their Bar: looked like ¼", and with no additional struts for support. Clearly "junk".

That would be another site, I should think, to search for Used K's.

good luck.

Thanks TaipanDuKayak for the suggestions. While I certainly wouldn’t mind a Hobie, they are just a bit out of my price range. Also I should’ve mentioned transportability. I would prefer something I can mount on the roof of my SUV by myself instead of something that will require a trailer. Looking to just keep everything as simple as possible. I would prefer something no bigger than 70-75 pounds or so and between 10-12 feet. So far the ones I’ve looked at are the Vibe sea ghost 110, Perception Pescador Pro 12, and the Emotion Steath Pro Angler.

Look at the Perception Pescador Pro at Black Creek Outfitters or Academy. They are made by Wilderness and cost about $800. I got mine at Black Creek on sale for $649.

also the regular Pescador is exactly like the Pro, minus the fancy seat. You could always modify your own.Cost about $650

Have you taken a trip to Black Creek Outfitters? If not, you should stop by. The staff knows a lot about fishing in yaks, and you can test out the kayaks in a pond behind the store before you buy. I have a Wilderness Systems ride 115 that is very stable, and paddles well too.

Thank Chris. I think I've narrowed down my options to the Vibe Sea Ghost 110 and Wilderness Systems ride 115 per your suggestion. Does Black Creek carry the Vibe? I want to be able to test both in person.

Mark T. here: I currently own the vibe sea ghost 110 and love it. Have only had it in the water once due to having double total knee replacements. The stability seems excellent, but i would not try to stand in it. i'm too old and off balance for that. You might be able to.I am 5'9 and 260 so it handles my weight .I also have owned a couple different Ride 115s and they are great. It's just that they were too heavy for me, about 85 lbs. I think whereas the ghost is less than 70 I think. If weight was not an issue I would probably get the Ride as long as you could get that mac daddy seat. Air pro max I think it's called. The one that looks like a lawn chair. Very sturdy.Good luck! btw , Rick's Bait and Tackle carries the Vibe kayaks, but I didn't get mine from them, they were always on order and to this day they never called me to let me know if they got any in.I actually drove down to someplace on the Sante Fe river I think it was called Spring to Sea Paddlesports. This was before Christmas! Try Rick's though, you may have better luck.

Not sure if BCO carries the Vibe.

Post subject:  Re: Help out a noob please!

BCO does not carry the Vibe kayak products, and I just found out they no longer have the Feel Free products....

You can call them at 904-645-7003 and make certain they have the W/S Ride 115 in stock so you can Demo it on 22 acre, spring fed Skinner Lake behind the store...they have been a very good solution for someone who is a bigger person, wants to stand, and wants a quality product!!

No, John. I have an Ocean Kayak Big Game II that is like new. I thought Knarnn might want it.
And, yes, good to be married. Having fun.

Appreciate the offer Clark. I ended up getting the BKC UH-RA220 from Brooklyn Kayak Company. Got a pretty good deal for the yak from an authorized dealer in Orlando. $700.00 out the door brand new. Hard to beat for a kayak that includes a rudder system. Can’t wait till all this rain stops to get her slimed. If anyone needs a fishing partner I am game!
