Nolenuttt......Since you mentioned "docks" I would consider boats being able to see and react to you!!
I think some type of "visible light source" is necessary to night fish anywhere there might be powerboats out and my choice would be a light pole mounted behind you...and I have two of the YakAttack VISIPole models...their older original one and also the jointed, 2 piece carbon one with the stronger LED lighting....long life LEDs provide strong light when needed and they even float!! Mounting the pole behind you provides you with 360* lighting and visibility and you can use the light for tying knots and lures on, and it will not "night blind" you!!

I have never fished at night without some type of "geek light headlamp....I have a couple of Black Diamond models which provide both red and white lighting and they have long lasting batteries and tilt up for distance viewing and down for close up stuff like tying on lures and unhooking fish.
Some people make their own DIY lights, but I am NOT a DIY guy....LOL!!
Good Luck!!!

Are you referring to a headlamp type light or one to light up the water to attract fish. A good led headlamp with multiple settings is nice to have and I always wear one for night fishing. There are a lot of good inexpensive ones available now that rival the expensive ones. Walmart has a good selection. I'd go for at least 125 lumens. As John mentioned, the Black Diamonds are nice. I have there top model with three colors and two white lighs with strobe options that I got as a gift and love it. Not sure I'd have spent $40-$50 on it though of my own $ though.. I also have a number less expensive ones and all work fine for night fishing. Also good to turn them on when a boat approaches your vicinity. Blinking lights are a nice option too.

I agree with everything John said. I added the yak light on top of my Power Pole stake. That LED up 8.5' really lights up the area. I also installed Super Nova (green led's) front and rear. Not only do they provide safety for me but I have had shrimp and mullet
actually jump in my yak.

Remember that lights at night attract bugs.
