New launching spot

Hi guys, I am not a kayaker but I'm charged with establishing a new parklike area with a kayak/canoe launching spot near the St. Augustine airport. I would love to hear from anyone with experience that might be able to offer advice and/or evaluation of my current plans. My intent is to not allow any type of powered boat due to lack of space and the fact that the creek (off the IC) is very small and tidal. Please email me at Gerry@geddings.net with any suggestions or whatever.
Thanks
Gerry

Glad to see that you have come to one of the best kayak websites for you local area  I am certain you will get some excellent feedback.

We have a similar project going on up here in Fernandina but we are having the opposite effect when it comes to providing feedback to the project. The person in charge doesn't want to hear from experienced kayak folks. He has already formed his opinion and is charging on.

One thing I really enjoy is launch areas that are sandy vs muddy. A bit of sand, brought in or naturally occurring, is really nice. A rinse station like they have at some of the bike trails would also be nice.

Glad to see this happening.
My dad recently worked to make another non-motorized launch up here in Jax. It has yet to happen, but it has been a learning process to say the least. He worked with some local politicians and the mayor who just got replaced. Lots of things to consider. If you would like to talk, please send me a PM. I'd be happy to help.

I'll investigate the sand. I currently have a concrete "ramp" poured in hopes of somewhat stabilizing the area. I also have a powerful artesian well that I plan to install a rinse station from. All info helpful. Thanks

Is this going to be a public launch?

It would be awesome if you would allow gheenoes and other small hp boats to launch also. There is no boat ramp in the area and small microskiffs and gheenoes can launch anywhere a kayak could. I can dry launch my skiff at Guana with no issue and these boat run easily in a foot of water. Just curious is this approved by the city or county? I guess the issue with small boats would be space for parking the trailer but lots of kayak guys are using trailers too so it would need to be addressed no matter what. I live near the airport so this could be a hot spot for me.

Put a sign that states no fishing from kayak launch ramp/dock. Go somewhere else like a pier or something to fish from land.

We have a separate fishing dock but it may be a while before it is useable. In answer to other questions, it is planned to be public use and it is not associated with the city or county but is part of the airport property although not actually on the airport secured area. I'll keep the gheenoe, etc option open for consideration but we will have very limited parking and at low tide the water is probably not even useable by kayak. I expect to be available Wednesday pm before my meeting at 6pm if any of you would like to take a look at the area and offer any insights you might have. I should explain that this development is being handled by the Pilot Association on whose behalf I am co-ordinating it. Drop me an email at Gerry@geddings.net and I'll give you my cell number. I'm not sure I should post it on a public forum like this.

Where abouts you thinking of building? North Blvd side or Gun Club side? I think it's a great idea saves me a trip from having to launch a Guana.

North Blvd side, we will be sharing the entrance to the new airport multi purpose bldg. and using the same parking lot. It is not currently open (although very soon) but the entrance is currently shown by a low gate just east of the airport multipurpose bldg. This project was started about 8 years ago and never really took off. I currently plan to have it open to the public within a month but don't hold me to an exact date. :beg:

Sounds like a cool project. It is very generous of the airport to donate the time and money to do this for the public. I love fishing airport basin and seeing the stunt planes do acrobatics while I fish... makes it that much better.

Hello Pirogue....and altho you said you were not a kayaker, a pirogue is pretty darn close!!! :salute:

Just read the whole thread and some very good and helpful comments were posted on here so you have some "helpful" people on here already!!

If you want a VERY GOOD example of a very poorly developed kayak/canoe launch area, check out "Castaway Island" in Jax on Pablo Road, and developed and run by the City of Jax....COJ. The park is very nice, but the launch area is almost useless except for a very short "window" before and after High Tides!! Another poor example is TideViews Park in Atlantic Beach.

If you give some directions or an address, I may run down there on Friday to check it out at your meeting!!
Thanks....JohnYaksJax
PS: My Master's Degree is in P.E. and Recreation, and I got 1/2 of my PhD in Recreation, so maybe some of those brain cells have survived...

Or Bee Street, on the Southbank in Jax. Worst. Launch. Ever.
