Wet rods (Clean post I promise)

Hey there yakkers. Any ideas as to how I can keep my rods and more importantly my reels dry while paddling? The holders in my kayak are kind of low to the water and I don't want them to get saltwater in the gears and rust up. Are there extensions you can buy or make for this issue? Thanks in advance!!!

Would probably be helpful to know 1.) what brand/model kayak you have and 2.) what type of rod holders you now have.

I've seen a few people on the water in sit-inside kayaks with flush-mount rod holders behind the cockpit and their reels are nearly dragging in the water.

Yak gear makes rod holder extensions just for this. They're at academy and on amazon

Pvc pipe snug in rod holder to any length you want cut a small notch at top for reel to slide in a little dont forget the leash and boom your good to go.

My solution was fly fishing...no gears, no worries. If you dunk 'em then just rinse them off when you get home. Plus, they make a 3 pound fish feel like a 10 pounder :-)

I don't worry about saltwater. My reels get soaked pretty much every time I go out. Just wash them off with soap/water and a little bleach every time and they will last. Of course you have to do normal maintenance. And it helps to buy good gear (we don't hesitate to drop 1500 on a boat but complain about spending 200 on a reel.) I got one rod that's 15 yrs old you can't tell the difference between it and one of my brand new ones.

I let mine soak in the pool while I unload and put stuff away every time I get home. I keep the chlorine on the low side and have not seen any bad effects on any of the braids I use. Remembering the old advice - I do not spray with the hose for fear of forcing sand and grit further into the nooks and crannies of my gear.

Mar Pro Salt Off
Concentrate

To treat items by immersing: add 2 to 4 fl.oz of Mar Pro Salt Off Concentrate to 1 gallon of fresh water. Immerse item to be treated for several minutes, rinse with fresh water and allow to air dry.

I soak my reels for about 10 minutes in a bucket of tap water and hang em up to dry for a couple of hours. I also disassemble and grease them pretty regularly.
