I have an Ocean Kayak and want to install a depth finder. It will need to be through-the-hull for the transponder since they don't mix well with oyster beds.

Does anyone have any tips or experience with them?

Models or installation tips?

hankbe, Both my wife and I use depth finders in our yaks. Hers is a HumminBird and mine is a Garmin 160C. Anne's black and white unit is a lot better on battery life than my color unit. Both have the transponder mounted inside the hull with Marine Goop. Our batteries are both motorcycle batteries 7-7.5 AH. They work as long as you remember to charge them after each weekends fishing.

Shoot it through your hull for sure. There is another active post on Marine Goop which tells you about installing the transducer. Color screen is nice but you might want to save your money as you'll probably not put it on your kayak once the "new toy" wears off.
