As soon as Max and I saw Tony Briggs place his fly rod in his hands we both knew that he was the real deal.

After about three perfect roll casts we quickly recognized that today’s special guest was no pilgrim. As the day unfolded, we were convinced that this trip was going to be one for the books.

Many people fish for fish and that is fine and commendable. Personally, I fish for friends……and I need all I can get. You cannot possibly spend half day 17 feet away from someone and not learn about that person. You know early on for instance whether he “gets it” or not. You can tell by his body language and comments (or lack thereof) that he enjoys every turn, every bird, and the sound of every movement or splash.

As I sat and listened to Tony and watched him work his magic I knew that we were on the same page. We fished, we talked, we journeyed and we thoroughly enjoyed God’s beautiful creation.

I try my best to include the old Crooked Creek bridge on my tours and today I learned a new fact about the bridge.

Tony pointed out that the foundation for the bridge was built back in the pre-plywood days when they used 1x6’s to build the forms. That is a fact that now I’ll be able to share with guests to come.

If the fish were bigger we would have had a boatload because the numbers were clearly there. We caught Bream, a small Bass, a Bullhead and Tony caught the fish of the day which was what we both identified as a Warmouth.

After we fished we paddled past my dock to catch a glimpse of the lake and then we returned home.

Tony Briggs will celebrate his 81st birthday in October. I just hope and pray that one-day younger guys will admire me as much as I have grown to admire Tony. Today was one for the memory books. I went fishing for another friend today and I caught a good one…….hook, line and sinker!
