Early Wednesday morning, I hit the Chicopit bay area. I spent nearly all my time near the mouth of a major creek draining into the ICW. I was there basically from 4-8 am, from the last of the outgoing to the first of the incoming. The majority of the fish were caught on a popper with a handful more on a paddletail and jig. Final tally was 8 trout (all 14-15 inches), 3 ladyfish including my PB at 23.5 inches, 2 jacks, 2 reds at 26 inches and my PB for any species at 33 inches, 12.5 lbs, and also my first legal mangrove snapper. Both reds surprised me, as they were in 1-2 ft of water, in the same area where I had small jacks swipping at my lure on nearly every cast. The big red first swirled on my lure and I didn't think it was even a fish. I thought it was some weird chop or a random wave. But he came back and my lure just disappeared. No explosion, it was more someone pulled the plug in the sink. It was an amazing fight. The fishing really slowed at first light and everything disappeared by 8 am. Don't miss out on that night bite! It's often some of the most aggressive and fast-paced fishing you will ever find.

Nice work! I recently caught my pb around 26" - that 33" must have been a great fight. What is the closest launch to Chicopit?

That would be the bridge of the A1A on the way to Mayport. Look under Fishing Spots on this site, go to Little Jetties Park, and it's the L2 launch point on Sherman Creek. The south side of the creek is far less muddy than the other side. I always try to launch on the outgoing.
If you go past that bridge for another 30 seconds, you'll see a beach on the St. Johns on the outside of the big turn in the road. I sometimes launch from there too, if I want to ride the incoming tide. But the L1 launch point on the fishing spots page is no longer accessible.

Nice red and congrats on one heck of a fishing partner, when I try to take my dog he has to eat anything that moves, including going after the fiddlers in the other side of a creek

Nice fishing, def some big reds in that area biggest I've ever caught on light tackle/ artificial was mid 40s, fight started back in the bay and finally landed it in the river by little jetties.
