Not much to report except a couple of dink trout and having my popping cork repeatedly harassed by a 4' alligator, but despite previous recent reports to the contrary, the lake level at SML is still ridiculously low. I've seen it lower, but not much. I know how to get to the deeper channel on the west side and I was still slogging through mud in 2" of water. If you must fish Guana Lake, I'd highly recommend launching at the dam.

I had couple good days in the river side last week. Good reds tailing. Saw one really large gator. Every bite was on dark color.

I did see a ton of fish activity almost the whole time, even through the heat of the day (and it was 103° heat index). I almost always use artificials of natural colors, which are typically dark. I only tried paddletails though -- the water was really too shallow for my 17MR collection, and I started too late for topwater. I did have a lot of fun playing fetch with that alligator, but did end up with a pretty chewed up poppin' cork. Still...worth it! :D

If the water is still low at SML next time, I'll launch from the dam. I always change my mind when I aim to try the river side of the dam because I end up just not wanting to mess with tides and especially mud.
