My buddy came fishing with me over the weekend and brought his one rod/reel combo. Not a bad looking set up but when he went to start using it, realized his reel had seized. Not a big deal, I had an extra for him to use. Last night I decided to take this thing apart and see if I could salvage the reel. What a complicated mess to disassemble! To take the side plate off you have to remove the whole upper assembly. Once I go that all taken apart, cleaned, and lubed back up I was fairly confident that would smooth the reel up at least to an operable level. WRONG! Took it back apart, this time going deeper into the reel. This time I opened up the main gear/bearing assembly (I think). This was rusted and corroded like crazy, started cleaning it up and what do you know... 2 of the bearing fall into my carpet!!! Spend about 10 minutes finding those little, tiny, pieces of rusted metal! Well, got that all cleaned up and began putting it back together only to realize I had the anti reverse spring/assembly thingy upside down!!! GEEZZZEEE. This was turning into a 3 hour project but what the helk I was learning a lot. So finally got that put back together right, tighten everything back down (almost completely stripped screws and all) to realize there is an extra screw. Well the reel works now except for the anti reverse, it's not "instant" anti reverse any more. It will crank the other way a little bit sometimes then three full cranks other times. Then i realized where I forgot the screw! Near the top of the side plate keeping that whole assembly in there tight. I gave up for the time being but may go back to it tonight; hopefully i find some compatible hardware from some old reels to replace stripped screws.... What a nightmare!
