Hi, I just bought my first kayak about a month ago. Been out about 12 times, caught very little so far. I want to try fishing at night. Do you need a specific type of light? Any suggestions about night fishing in kayaks?

Flash light is all that is required.

I have a VisaCarbon light pole/flag that I use a night. I also have a clip-on LED that fits on the bill of my cap.

Don't consider putting the green/red stern lights on your kayak. Other boaters will think your a boat that has the power to navigate away/around them.

Law says all you need is one white light that can be seen from all angles or something like that. I go out a bunch at night and usually birng a battery powered lantern that i keep in the back, a headlamp, and usually a flashlight. I like to make sure i can see what im doing and where im going along with i want others to see me. I stay close to shore or a bridges.
Your best bet for getting fish at night will be to fish lighted docks or the shadow line of a bridge. Take a DOA glow shrimp and toss it up current past the light or shadow line. Bring it back slowly with the current either right up the surface of the water or on bottom with shape snaps in the retrieve.

Another trick you can use for visibility is to get a Led waterproof light preferably a lantern type and secure it inside a hatch and leave it on. If you have a light colored kayak the hull will glow that color and boaters will see that, in addition to just looking neat reflecting in the water. This will not meet the CG requirements but will help in being seen by boaters. Who know's maybe even attract bait fish.
I love going out at night, especially when the days are too hot. It's very peaceful.

Snookslayer says a light that is visible from all angles. That's where I'm not clear on this. Is a LED light that fits on my forehead sufficient or do I really need a 360 degree light of some sort? I don't want to get fined a fortune over something I didn't know. I am low on funds and hope I can just use the light on my head. Planning on using it for some night fishing onshore too at nearby Ponce Inlet.

the light on your hat will work but i would have more light than that. I would go to wally-world and pick out a cheep light(under $20). It's more about being safe than getting a fine.

This is a good LED waterproof diving light for under $20. I mounted mine on a length of 1/2" pvc above my head behind me on my milk crate.

I also carry a battery powered spotlight (my Ryobi with a rechargeable battery) so I can alert other boaters or see the shorelines.

Same light, much cheaper.......

Fantasea Nano Spotter 5 LED Dive Light with Diffuser.......$9.95 with free Shipping & Handling.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5 ... otter.html
Light-
~4 AAA Batteries.
~60 Hours at max output.
~Tested water tight to 40m/130ft.
~Positively Buoyant.
~Diffuser Cone is removable= flashlight!

Image

Pole-
~3/4"SCH 40 PVC for light mount.
~1/2" PVC for shaft, 3-4' long (fits in Scotty base).
~3M Scotchlite Reflective Decals

Using a Heat Gun, I was able to form one end to fit the Flashlight (it slides in about 2" and is secure/tight). It is a slow go with the heat gun, I had a bowl of iced water to dip the PVC in, so it would keep it's shape when forming.

Very cool light. For now, I just went out and bought a light that fits on my forehead. Want to try onshore at Ponce Inlet maybe tonight and see how it goes with that first.

After last night I remembered all about night fishing...... forget the damn light and take bug spray instead. All the light does is attract millions of bugs :smoke:
