Today was my first time out and man it was full of mistakes and learning experiences. First off didn't catch a single fish but to be honest I wasn't real focused. I was trying to find out how long it would take me to get to certain areas and just seeing how everything worked. Left out about an hour before high tide and headed to blue heroin creek where I know there are some fish. I will be finding a closer place to put in next time... I had a skitter walk, DOA combo and a jig/paddle tail and just played around a little. Saw a couple of redfish but no hits. I trolled a little with the jig while looking around... had a good time minus the sunburn on my knees... can't believe I forgot to put sunscreen on them!

Any recommendations on pain relievers for my shoulders? haha

I've only been at this yak fishing a short while so I can relate to your post.
Is Heroin Creek anywhere close to Cocaine Cove;-)

Yes, use a trolling motor like I do. It will help your shoulder pain! :joker:

You might be doing better than me -- my boys and I didn't catch anything the first 4 times we went out!

I went out for my fourth time ever today. I am still finding my way around as well. I have a 14' Malibu XFactor. I definitely need to finish rigging my yak. Good luck out there and be safe.

I am still figuring out what I need and don't need as far as rigging goes. That was really the purpose of going out yesterday. I had fun regardless of catching fish or not. I have decided an anchor and anchor trolly or a stake out pole is needed.

I'm a year into kayak fishing and the learning never stops. Exploring and trying different things are the way to learn. Listening to the more experienced helps speed that process. Just when Ive had a great day and think I've figured the fish out, everything changes. Now that I have a year in and have seen the changes with each season, I'm trying to remember what I did this time last year to catch fish. This thing called kayak fishing is very addictive and impossible to stop. :?

Well my luck changed a little yesterday. I caught a whiting on a grub which wasn't what I was expecting, followed by 1 small trout, 13'' flounder and a stingray on the DOA shrimp.

I fish mine somewhat slow with twitches (like a sluggo maybe) trout like it when it's falling, sometimes I speed it up and work it like a rapala. Just picture a wounded fish. But I have caught fish just throwing it out and trolling it behind me while paddling around (if it's not in the water it can't catch fish).

If your line isn't wet, you won't catch fish. I usually have a jig head and soft plastic trolling behind me whenever I am moving from place to place. Another good lure for trolling is the Bomber Long A.

I just got done reading everything I could find about fishing the MR 17 and I am pumped to say the least! Thanks.

About trolling... how far back and about how fast are you paddling? I heard the slower the better but I seem to find snags and the bottom a lot.
