I have an old reel that is getting kind of hard to reel with and am new to fishing, but I was wondering what do you you use/do for your rod and reels for maintenance and how often do you clean and lubricate them? I have a week off and want to make sure I hit the water with my gear being as good as it can be. :smoke:

I do a rinse, dry and spray (reel magic or Penn lube on reels and Lemon Pledge on the rods) after each outing and probably do 2-3 overhauls per season. Just stay away from WD40 regardless of what they say it will destroy your line.
On a full tear down I use Penn grease and Rocket Fuel oils or Quantum Hot Sauce inside my reels.

A good rinse and wipe down after each outting. Put a drop of oil on the line roller bearing each time. Full service is usually couple times a year.

I use "Magic Mystry Oil" for just about everything including my reels. It's less than five bucks for about a pint sized bottle.
Those little squeeze bottles of reel oil are a complete rip-off.

Sorry for my dumb question but what does a a full service usually entail.

Here is link for Shimano's maintance. Would work on all brands of reels.

Just got done doing first full maintenance and am surprised how much better they are now. Even the reel that locked up on is usable again :smoke:

That is not a full maintenance but that does keep your reels going longer without a full maintenance which is about 1-2 years. A full maintenance involves taking apart the reel down to the gears and bearings, cleaning the old greases and oils off and re-applying new greases and oils. Since youre new I would recommend taking to a shop, watching videos VERY CLOSELY!, or looking at your parts diagram that came with your reel. Hope this gives you a better idea of what to do.

As a heads up, do not use break parts cleaner. I melted all the plastic components on a reel using it. I know it was dumb but I had no idea it melted plastic until after the fact. It cleaned it right up tho! lol

I'll throw one more caveat out there for full "tear down" maintenance. Make sure you put it back together the same day you tear it down and clean it out while it's still fresh in your mind. I took an old Curado down a year or so ago and didn't get around to putting it back together because I needed a new part. Well, it still sits in a box. One of these days I'll get to it but it's going to be like a jig saw puzzle since it is stripped to the smallest washer.

I've been using Salt Away, but am wondering if it's ok to spray that stuff on your line. Does anyone know if this is OK? Generally, when I get in I spray all of my rods and reels with Salt Away, wait a few minutes and then hose off (lightly).
