Hey guys, do any of you use any kind of ultralight combo for fishing inshore? I'm looking to get the Penn Battle 1000 size and pair it with some sort of 6 to 7 ft medium or medium light rod, 8- 10 pound braided line. I just figured something a bit smaller and lighter would be good for throwing light jigs all day, plus make for a fun fight if I get a good red fish. Do any of you use a similar setup? Any recomendations for rod and reel? Anyone have a setup that you're looking to sell?
matt

I only use 2500 size reels and 6-6 1/2 ft rods. But I use 20lb braided line. I tried some 12lb braid but got cut off by oysters & snook several times. Never had that problem again once I switched to 20lb. Overslot reds have been no problem along with some nice size snook.

I use shimano 1000's 99% of the time inshore spooled with 5-8 lb power pro. I use 12lb leader 50% of the time. On the Rod I have 6'6 up to 7'6 depending on what I am throwing and where. Given i mostly fish very shallow 2' - 5", I think I may be under gunned if I was fishing for Big reds in the river but in a smalll creek in the shallows its not an issue to land a fish quickly. It is nice having a lite setup when casting all day, also can make very long cast with ease.
I do have 2 2500's that I break out durning the fall flounder run(when going for meat) spooled with 10lb braid. I'm not to sure how much 15lb line can fit on a 1000 but i can get a lil less than 140yds on my 2500 with 10lb braid.

I think once you start fishing with the 1000 size reels you will question how you ever used anything else. Now if you bottom fish it really doesn't matter, but casting all day I fell in love with the set-up you are speaking of.

Hey UNFBass........I have a Shimano Stradic CI4 1000F and I really love it!!
I put it on a 6' St. Croix "Ultra-Lite Power" (fast action) rod and it is a sweet combo....bought a 2 piece rod so that I can fly with it in a tube.
Strung it with Berkley FireLine Crystal in the 6# weight class....and I take it out nearly every trip!!
Like it was said above, I "up" the leader to 14-15# flouro because of getting cutoff on oysters.
The balance of this rig is outstanding!!

I mainly bought it for traveling to TN and now NC and for panfish, crappie, F/W trout, and smallmouth bass.
So far, it has caught the 3 "slam" species we target including a 25" redfish, a few shoal bass in GA in the Flint River, legal sheepies, a 21" black drum, and a 25" hybrid bass (mix of striped bass and white bass) last Feb. up in TN.
Whatever you get, enjoy your new toy!!

PS: If you wanna cast it sometime, just let me know.....

^^^Thats a helluva setup John.
I have 8# spiderwire ultracast on a Sedona 1000 reel. I found a 6'6" Penn ultralight rod at Strikezone for $12. This is the longest casting setup I have ever had. I can throw it all day without my shoulders getting sore. The biggest fish I have caught on it is a 23" red though.

I meant the light tackle lecture haha, glad to see I'm not the only one who doesnt hunt mice with an elephant gun. I use 2000 and 3000 series reels on 6'6" and 7' medium and medium light rods mainly because that's what I bought when I first started fishing saltwater and am saving for a quality reel or 2 that will be 1000's. With most inshore fish being under 10lbs the lighter line should handle anything the creeks hold, just beef up the leader if you are fishing a lot of structure. I prefer an 8 lb mono/flouro blend line, fits plenty on my spool, casts a mile and great presentation while still allowing you to get the fish to the boat and back in the water safely if you're releasing it. Either way you go, fish with what works for you. Go to the next local fishing tourney, ask the top 5 finishers what they use and you'll probably get 5 different answers.

:D OK can't let this slide. One of my Emmrod Packrod spin models combined with a 1000 to 2500 series reel. Load 10lb Fireline Crystal or if you want mono use 8lb Trilene XL. Here is a shot of a cast from last week at Lake of the Woods using the new Emmrod 2000 series reel and that 8lb XL. My brother took the shot of me making this one across a small bay during one of our lunch stops.

I will say if you want light tackle go light tackle, a 300, 2500, or 2000 isnt light.. Start off with a 1000 and see what you think... Would go with 6lb mono or if ur a braid guy go with 5lb like Dj said.. go with a 6'6 rod then when you get used to it go ultra light with a 500 series reel with 2lb-4lb with a 5'6 rod

I have all 2500 size reels on 6 to 6'9 medium rods using 15 to 20 lb braid. my biggest thing is all about how the reels balance the rod and the 2500 work great for the rods I have. the 20lb braid is crazy strong nothing inshore would break it. I have tried the 10 and 8 lb braid but it cuts my hand a lot and drives me nutts cast really far though. And when catch reds around docks you need to keep them out so you don't break off. I have a bream pole though that's like a 500 and is a ultra light that thing is fun.

I use a 1000, 2000 and 3000, caught a 29" drum on the 1000 with 6# suffix braid, but currently my 2000 stratic spooled with 8# nano, on a 7' ML popping stick by Falcon is my goto combo. The 3000 is a ci4 with 12# nano, on a custom 7'2" ML rod, I love that combo but but its a lot of over kill for what I use it for. Here a pick of JYJ and his UL combo in action.

aint fishin "grand", C.
