Hey everybody,

The family and I just got started kayaking up here in Middle Georgia and we are loving it. We've been to a couple state parks and we're planning more trips all over Georgia and north Florida.

Anyways, we're like to take good quality pictures while we're out but there is always that fear of dropping the camera or getting wet somehow. So, we are looking for either a really good waterproof camera or a really good waterproof case for the Iphone 4s.

Wondering if any of you guys have any recommendations.

Thanks,
Jett

A lot of iphone users like the LifeProof cases

I do have a waterproof camera I use though since the cameras on cell phones have such tiny optical sensors. Mine is an Olympus Tough but I know that Panasonic and others make some nice cameras that do stills and video and are waterproof.

Check out the Canon D10. A very rugged and waterproof camera. I have been happy with mine.

The only thing the Canon D10 is good for is taking pictures of Clark hold a big red fish. It won't work for anything else :smoke:

You iPhone guys are lucky. There are numerous options for you. I use a HTC Evo and a ziplock bag is your best option!

I use a Fuji Finepix Z33 WP, which was well under $200 back when I bought it. They discontinued that model/series and replaced it with the almost identical XP series. You can get the equivalent features in the Fuji Finepix XP-30 for only $125. It's very small, waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, all that good stuff. It's not going to take better pictures than a DSLR, but it will take better pics than any smartphone out there. Underwater video is pretty cool -- love using it in the pool for that. I take it with us in the canoe as a fishing camera now. I tied a piece of pool noodle to it in case it takes a dive over the edge.

The only negative to this particular camera is that I originally bought it for my wife, so it's pink. There are better colors available for those who plan ahead and realize who will most likely be using it. ;)

My phone (HTC EVO 4G) comes with me but goes into a "locked" tupperware type container, along with my wallet, key fob, fishing license, boat registration, etc.

^^^^Like Jerry says...Do Not Buy the Canon D10 unless you plan on catching overslot reds on a regular basis

I have two teenagers who get new cameras nearly every Christmas, so I use hand me downs. They are not water proof or even hi-res
but I figure it this way, if you catch bigger fish why bother with a 16 megapixel camera. I also carry my iphone for mostly tracking weather and fish markers via gps, I have a good case but keep it in a hd zip lock. It floats, C.

The Lifeproof cases are excellent. I have one of the iphone 5s and the camera is good enough I've been using it for most of my work required shots. However a waterproof camera offers a few more options. I also have the Olympus Tough. The camera offers the ease of a tripod mount using my Gorilla Pod and lots more adjustment options. For the iphone I have to buy a few more add on items to catch up. Lifeproof just introduced a Life Jacket for the 5 and it's on my list along with their mounting gear.

I use a GoPro 2. The 3 has recently come out, so I think you can pick up the 2 for around 200.00 now. It's extremely rugged, the same camera you the contestants carrying on the show Wipeout. I love mine, mainly because of the large amount of available accessories it has, allowing me to mount it on most anything. Besides fishing I use it for mountain biking, my son's ATV, water parks, swimming pools, my son's boogie board, and I even mount it to my son's baseball helmet.

There are a few drawbacks I've found so far. It requires high speed SD cards, and those are not cheap. The internet helps, but it's still painful. There is no flash. I caught two trout around 6:30 Sunday morning, and the pics were way too dark. When in the waterproof case, the sound quality is reduced for movies. While the movie quality is superb, I'm left to simply add music in this situation.

For me, I love the hat/helmet mounts, the ability to mount to to a PFD easily, the handlebar mount, and I've even mounted to a fishing rod. If you want durable and vesatile, GoPro is great. If you want a flash and waterproof sound quality, I would look at other options.

Ps - I see the whitewater guys in North Ga mount them to the front of their kayak and to their helmet. Thought I'd mention it since you said you were in middle Ga.

Hey Jeffrey....re: the LifeProof cases, you said above "I have one of the iphone 5s"...is that correct??

I did not know that they were shipping yet and I have a "phone upgrade decision" coming up after March 22, and the iPhone is on my very short list....
Looking forward to your answer....Thanks!!
John
