I'm not sure if you all know about what is going on in NC at the Cape Hatteras National Recreation Area. But a long story made short is that the National Park Service is closing down the beaches to public access. All started several years ago by a law suit from the Audobon Society and the Defenders of Wildlife. As of now most of the island has been closed off and the fantastic fishing areas among them.
There is legislation pending (S2372) to overturn the NPS ruling and open the island again. It has devistated the business there not to mention the loss of some of the nicest beaches on the East Coast.
OVR's have been allowed since the inception of the National Recreation Area. They must be legal street vehicles not jacked up off road supertrucks. We have always been able to access our favorite areas. Now they have been closed off and I'm sure the vast majority of supporters have never set foot on these beaches. It is not full of monster trucks tearing up and down the beaches. It is families going out for the day, fisherman hitting thier favorite spots , surfers looking for the perfect wave, etc , etc. The supporters of the shut down are calling the bill " The Road Kill Bill". Funny the only documented sea turtle ever hit was run over by a Park Service truck.
If you have ever been lucky enough to visit you will have seen how clean the beaches are and how the vast majority of visitor and local keep it that way. Travel on the beaches is very safe and wildlife is respected.
If you are interested you can read about our plight you can google the Island Free Press. http://www.islandfreepress.org/index.html

Sorry to hear that. Our beaches down here have been closed for years to cars. The few still open down in St. Augustine are now restricted to 8am-6pm so the turtle people can monitor the turtles.

At another of our parks (Huguenot) that are trying to ban cars on the beach to save birds.

The ongoing assault on our liberties - heck humanity is just a virus upon the Earth according to all these folks.

It's absolutely terrible, I can't believe whats happening to the OBX. I grew up there and my parents still live there, its absurd the access restrictions being put in place there. What used to be the top surf-fishing destination on the east coast is rapidly turning into an all "no access" beach. Every time I go back to visit, its getting worse and worse - not to mention all the damage from last season's hurricanes. I've traveled all around central america and the caribbean and can honestly say, the OBX is one of the most pristine and beautiful beaches. I really hope things turn around soon.
