I like a wide selection of baits live shrimp dead shrimp sand fleas and clams. I like the pier but look for sandfleas if you fish from the beach that will give you a good indicator as to where the fish are.

I love surf fishing.... that doesn't mean I'm good at it. :) one of the mods on the Florida sportsman forum is a good surf fisherman. He told me to catch pompano, I need live clams. I bought some at fisherman's dock and caught my first pompano ever. He also send me some pics of the rig he uses and I tied a variation of it. Its important to have a swivel on the top at the line and on the bottom near the pyramid sinker to keep it from twisting.

I also like to buy live shrimp, toss them in in the cooler an use pieces for whiting.

That's an impossible survey to answer. Now if you asked it of which species you were fishing for that would be another question. I use different baits depending on the species I am fishing for. Example : Reds are rarely caught on sand fleas and use cut bait or dead shrimp when surf fishing. Blues love cut bait.Pompano are best caught on sand fleas in my opinion. Etc, etc , etc

I agree on what species you are fishing for. For example if you were after pompano using a finger mullet won't get you the desired results. However if you are standing in the wash and see a lot of sand fleas using them would be better for pompano. That would be for two reasons. A....there are sand fleas there and pompano eat sand fleas....B...there are sand fleas there and pompano go where sand fleas are. A classice case of, "Match the hatch."

On the other hand everything eats shrimp. ......including the fisherman.

But cut mullet, cut ladyfish is good bait for a lot of fish.

Use what is there. Always carry some shrimp.

Thanks Jizzo! those were some great tips and i love the rig. I use something similar to that. But clams were a great idea i've never used them before as you can tell im sort of a rookie...but hey we all gotta start somewhere!!

And bakerman i love that quote, "On the other hand everything eats shrimp. ......including the fisherman. "

and sorry to bakerman and oletimer youre right i should have specified. Personally I'm interested in a reds and pompano. I'll see if i can revise the poll

For me... clams for pompano... shrimp bits for whiting.... cut mullet (or ladyfish) for reds and black drum. :fart4:

Cut mullet is excellent shark bait, especially offshore.
