We braved the weather an went fishing at Guana today. I launched at sml about 10:30 an fished until about 4pm. We really didn't have much luck fishing and it was pretty windy. We had an east wind so I thought maybe the surf would have cleaned up some. So after an hour paddle against the wind we loaded up and went up to the picnic tables. Sure enough the ocean was pretty clean... not calm but clean. So we decided to give it a try.

Me and Wildyaks (Jacob) got our kayaks about a month ago with the idea that we want to fish the ocean. So we decided to make our first beach launch ever. We carried the yaks down the steps and went for it. Jake jump on his yak and started paddling right away... he had no trouble getting out. I tried to walk out to the sand bar the jump on... I paid for that decision... twice. I finally made it out to join Jake and fell out of my yak again. When I jumped back in I fell out the other side. :) I practiced my deep water entry 4 times.... Jake didn't get a chance to practice his :(. I didn't realize until I got out there the waves were about shoulder high. It would have been a good day to surf.

We paddled around for a few minutes then reluctantly decided to start our paddle back to shore. We both used the "face the ocean" re-entry. What a great idea, it went perfectly for both of us.

What I learned....
*Its better to get in the yak in the shallow water and paddle through the waves rather than to try to jump in from the deeper water.
*This was about the biggest surf that i would ever launch in.
*My camera mount and Scotty rod holders were in a bad place for me to get back in the yak.
*A strong east wind will blow me away from the shore quickly.
*The backwards re-entry works
*Its better to lean forward when going into the waves.

This was one of the most exciting things that I have done. I really had a great time and I'm glad I got this first try out of the way.

I took some bad video and tried to edit it down some. Its kinda choppy.

There are some videos on youtube showing how to do it. It feels unnatural but it works really well. I'll see if I can find the video I saw and post it.

Another thing you want to consider is a paddle leash when in the ocean. For what ever reason if you loose it out there, it will be hell getting back. Even consider some hand paddles as a back up stored inside.

Yep... I have a leash I made out of paracord that I use at all times. That paddle is our motor... without it we are screwed. I also carry a ping pong paddle as a backup paddle/bait cutting board. ;)

I found a video with a pretty good example of the backwards surf landing. And its from one of the website sponsors Kayak fishing supplies. :)
