Change it out once a year. However, don't forget you can reverse the braid on the spool and get another year use out of it

Until couple years ago I was like lots of folks. I would try braid for a while and then go back to mono. Over and over and over...

I realized one day that the newer reel spools have been machined differently which eliminates most of the wind knot problems. Look at the inside lip of your spool. The older spools have a squared lip. The newer reels/spools have a taper on the inside of the lip.

I have also learned how to "feather" the line with my finger on the last part of the line coming off the reel. This allows the line to straighten out somewhat before landing on the water.

Haven't had issues with braid lately but flourocarbon has been pissing me off. I keep having issues with Seaguar flouro snapping extremely easy when put under pressure. I think I'm done buying any of their line for a while.

I basically have used the same lines as Clark as well as PP., two of which have become my favorites. I love the smootheness of Berkley nanophil, its like fishing with silk and its round like mono not ftat like braid or fused., (pricey,@ 20 bucks for 100 yrds). It will solve your wind knot problem up to 12# test. Thats the biggest they make. From there its Suffix braid all the way. Tough stuff, I have had very little trouble with it that wasn't caused by my own ignorance. Also check for dings on the rim of your spools. Aluminum spools are great but they ding easily and can cause line damage on every cast.

wind knots suck, C.

I've been using PP for about 5 years now... Spooled up one of my reels with the Spiderwire Ultracast Invisibraid last Friday after reading some good reviews of it on these forums. Fished Browns Creek Saturday in 20+ mph winds... not one wind knot and my casting distance was noticeably improved. Using it with a flouro leader tied with Albrights and loop knots on the jig. I liked it so much more than PP I have already re-spooled my other reels with it this week.

To answer your original question, the only time I have really had issues with PP breaking off is when I have had it spooled from the big spool at the shop.
