5 years ago I approached Mike Kogan on his thoughts on kicking off our event in the Forgotten Coast and he gave me sound advice that has contributed to the success of our event to this day. This year we had to raise the prices, and lower our entries or not have a venue that could hold the crowd. It was a complete success for Meals on Wheels of Wakulla County. They got a cash injection of over $7000 with over 100 entries. Thanks to all of the sponsors and the participants.
The 2012 5th Annual Forgotten Coast Kayak Fishing Classic kicked off its Captains meeting on Friday the 13th and it was not at all an unlucky day. Some anglers were rewarded with some nice brand new Polar Bear coolers for the captains meeting raffle and everyone received a complementary bar-b-que meal along with sandwiches wrapped and ready to be used for lunch while on the water the next day. The following day was predicted by NOAA to be a 20+ knot wind and straight out of the east. That makes it difficult to catch fish no matter where you fish. When anglers hit the boat ramp, some called to question if the tournament was still on and it was. A little wind out of the east is not going to shut us down. That’s a typical weekend around these parts and you just have to learn how to fish it. At the end of the day, there were a number of tired anglers and a little less than half of then 100+ anglers caught fish for the Charity event put on to benefit Meals on Wheels of Wakulla County. After the cutoff time of 4:00 pm, the number were tallied up and the raffle began with some results thrown in just to keep everyone entertained. But no matter how tough it was, there were a few people that were a little tougher, and the anglers aged from 7 to 65 in the winners circle. All the winners were rewarded with a brand new kayak donated by the sponsors of each division. Second place winners received a Polar Bear Cooler from Polar Bear, and a Rod/Reel Combo from Kevin’s. Third place winners received a paddle from TnT Hide-A-Way and a PFD courtesy of MTI. Yak Attack donated lots of prizes to our worthy cause as well as Siemens that covered the cost of food, and trophies. Monogram Art donated custom engraved glasses, and St Marks Outfitters donated tackle and gear. Capt Pat McGriff drove all the way over from Steinhatchee to school us on fishing the Big Bend and brought along a sweet donation from Saltwater Assassin. Capt Mike Hakala with Aqua Dream Livin spoons donated some sweet spoons that were used by most of the winners that caught redfish and Trout. Sunjammers in addition donated more prizes as well as Kevin’s for the raffle. It was a great event that would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, and thanks to Liam Callaghan and his family and friends for whipping up a low country boil for the tournament day meal.
