Thanks to John for my new Overboard fishing rod, he dropped it off around 5 today and I couldnt help myself I had to go try it.. I got the 7ft model.. I had to find a reel to put on it and I had a 2500 laying around so I put that on and took off, def gonna go get me another 1000 to go on it.. I can say I have not one bad thing to say about these rods. They are super light weight and they cast a country mile, 1st fish was a flounder at about 18" and ifelt the slightest tap with this rod and it handle it perfect.. I was throwing a 1/8oz Sureset jig with plastic.. Then got a nice trout @ 18" on the same setup and this rod has plenty of backbone but yet super sensitive tip.. End up throwing a spinnerbait looking for a red and hooked up and drag went screaming and pulled the hook but the rod was about to put the smack down on him... The next 30 mins I threw plastic and topwater and ended catching plenty of trout.. Over all the rod is perfect and I recommend everyone to get one... If you fish from a yak it is a must.. Take those goofy foam things off and get these rods.. The only problem I have is I only got 1 I think imma have to get a few more.. Super great product from John and Sean and these guys are out here living it so get out there and support them!!!!!

Looks like the new rod worked great for you. Great pics, too bad you didn't get that red (?). I hadn't heard much about them. Where did you get it and how much was it? I need something new to get this skunk off my back.

Good report! Dropped a rod overboard from my yak Tues. and grabbed it just before it went under with my new stradic. All I could think about was when will I get my new overboard rod delivered. When I got home there it was waiting for me. Not only is this a real quality rod but it serves a great purpose. I already know I will be ordering another. Can't wait to give it a try.

Sure Catch: Looks like Sean and John have a sick product; great to see the rod in action. Used to work with those two and I can definitely say they know their stuff.

I'm down here in Orlando now for good, so I don't have the chance to give the rods a try. But if you ever have a spot on your boat, I'd love to join you on the goon' and give them a shot; I need a lightweight 7ft. for all the Gator trout we have down here  Send me a PM if you get the chance man

Hey Sure Catch!
I have few other curious questions?
Most rods can be built to various sensitivities.
Med.-Heavy Action,
Light-Med. Action...
and have Line Test ranges...
What ranges did you pick to use on the rod you have?
You don't ever have a dull day on the waters, do you! :salute:

Hey Quake, I got the 7fy med/light.. Its a perfect all purpose rod but the have different ones for every need.. They will for sure help with feeling the light bites of those trout and flounder, and they have enough ass to wear a big red out quick... Get you one quake and you will love it!!!!

Sorry Sure Catch but I'm sticking to Fiberglass if I ever buy new for now as every graphite pole I've ever owned has slipped it's way into the grave yard one accident at a time for various reasons.
I have gone though dozens of brand names in my past ventures and the worst way of losing one is to over rate the line test limits printed on the pole.
But getting into the 20 to 30lb. test line ratings you then lose the feel at the tip too! So I would option to less action at the tip as well to compensate on my choice in any new rods.
I do like using one graphite as my Casting Rod loving that lighter weight, but the two in the back as my trolling rods are Ugly Sticks. Fiberglass Rods have had the longest life spans in my clumsy precarious life style of fishing.
I just broke an 8' graphite Shimano last week getting the hook/lure off an oyster bed very close to the Yak. Broke it between the first eye and second eye of the rod just above the two piece coupling! :angryfire: Got the lure back!
I have had to get mostly second hand or hand me down Rods anyway just to keep up with the Joneses, going fishing this way. LOL This $15.00 Rod lasted only 3 trips.
Maybe I'll see one of these Rods in a Pawn Shop or Thrift Store someday. I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for the brand name. Good info for someone wanting to be free of the Ugly Floating Foam! :thumbright:

Hey quake you do know the easiest way to get a hook out of the oysters is to pull the rod straight back at you, not get right over it and have the rod bend over. I have been using the same graphite rods for the past 4 years and have caught everything from small brim to a 15lb schoolie dolphin offshore, more than I can count good sized red and black drum.

Sure catch those rods look great i am gonna have to get me one of those.

Ed's right on the money about these rods... I got mine last week, but didn't get the chance to try it out until Friday & Saturday. I fished up here in Jax all day Friday, and fished the IRL all day Saturday... as you all know it was pretty windy out on both days, with Saturday being the worst down south (winds were 20-25 all day sustained, with gusts 30+). My Overboard rod performed like a champ! Casted extremely smooth, and goes a country mile! I've always been a huge fan of Star rods, and St. Croix rods, but have now been converted!

First let me introduce myself since this is my first post here. My name is Captain Sean Abbey and I am co founder of Overboard Fishing Rods. I don't generally do forums, don't have the tempermant for it. I have been fishing and involved with the ocean since I could walk and had the pleasure of growing up with a father with an obsession for fishing. I spent nearly as much time on or in the water as I did on dry land for most of my life.

That being said I know a great deal about this sport but I do not pretend to know everything. I learn something new everytime I go and everyone, no matter their skill level, has something to teach you.

As far as breaking graphite rods, it can be easily done when they are being used wrong. The line rating isn't as much about the pound test you put on the reel that is on that rod but more about your drag setting. A properly set drag is key for me in my fishing. You don't need a 25 to 30 pound rated rod if you spool with 30 pound braid.

In my opinion the biggest reason rods break is because we use them for to many scenarios. A 1/4 to 5/8 ounce lure rod was not meant to throw a ounce and half lead bait rig. The next is the abuse they take when kayaking. It is hard to take immaculate care of things while kayaking. My next reason would be from a user created defect, i.e. dinging your blank with a jighead ect. It may not seem like anything at first but more times than not it put a weak point there. The final more popular reason they break is that in the quest to build lighter and lighter rods sometimes the technology gets ahead of the function. Most blank manufactures have now caught up and rods are constantly getting better.

All this said the perfect blanks In my eyes for the kayak fishing lifestyle are IM6 graphite blanks and Graphite blends. They give you the best of both worlds, they are lighter weight and can take more of a beating than high modulous graphite rods.

Thankyou for the kind words on the rods fellas!

Capt Sean
