Headed out this morning around 7:30am with plans to catch some sheep. Hit the very tip of the southern rock line, dropped the trolling motor, hit spot lock and went to slayin. Ended our day early(11:00am) with 15 nice Sheepshead. Ran out of fiddlers and said heck with it and went home early. Now im headed to the ocean to kick it with the wife for a few hours:) Nice day. The big one was my pb at 10lbs.

Anyone know what the hell this thing is?

That other fish is a soapfish, they hang around the tips of the jetties.

That first pic looks like a sheep but aren't the rest black drum?

Mystery fish is not a soapfish. It is a Gulf Hake. They are pretty tasty.

Good call on the hake. I just looked him up and that is most definitely what i caught. Tell yah what, that thing was tough. very good fight. Not a bad sized fish. I actually thought to myself that it looked like a Cod when i was trying to figure out what it was. Gj and thank you.

They are all Sheepsheads. Didn't get any Drum today.

Drums don't have the teeth that all these guys have. Also look at the eyes. The bodies are all very round as well. I just cleaned them and i promise, they are all Sheep. lol

Like JYJ would say:
Black Drum, 2 words, 2 dorsal fins.
Sheepshead, 1 word, 1 dorsal fin.

Black Drum, flat tail.
Sheepshead, "V" tail.

Great catches on the Sheepies!!!! :thumbright:

Very interesting fish!
Looks like you have got the Sheepshead fishing figured out. I have not been able to figure them out but have only been out sheepshead fishing once. That Key West seems to be keeping lots of fresh fish on the table, lots of good reports lately.

Great report Steve! You definitely killed them!

The main reason I see some peolple confuse Sheeps with Drum is when sheeps die, they turn pale and the black stripes disappear making them look like drum.

Here is our way of handling sheeps mainly for two reasons. One is pretty pictures, and the otheris for preparing them to eat. When we catch sheeps, we put them in the livewell until we get home. After we get home, we take pictures of the sheeps when they are alive which makes for pretty picture with the stripes and dorsal fins erect. Picture of dead sheeps is not pretty as you can see. When we are done taking pictures, I slit their gill area and let them all bleed. They die soon after bleeding and then I clean them Immediately. This way the meat looks very white. If you don't bleed a sheep, you will notice that the fillets are pinkish. If you bleed them, they are white and tastes even better.

Arun.
