Being I am not real thrilled about drilling holes thru my Jeep hardtop (and that solution won't work with the soft top) does anyone have recommendations on a trailer for a 12-14' yak? Was thinking a lightweight utility trailer instead of a $1500 kayak specific trailer.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Dave

I'm planning on buying the 4x8 folding trailer from Harbor Freight and building it out. About $300.

I'm planning on getting a 5x10 used and putting a truck rack on it.
Looking for the right cheap trailer.....truck racks are the easy part.

I found a used jetski trailer on craigslist and modified it to fit my 12'9" ocean kayak perfectly.

just don't put that harbor freight trailer in the water. I wouldn't even put it on the saltwater that drained out of boats at the ramp

I've got $800 in this trailer and worth every single penny  It is a far better trailer than the ones for $1,500++

Nice. Just saw a guy on CL selling single ski trailers for $300.

My thoughts with the HF trailer, though, is that I can built it out for different uses. I want to be able to change it out to carry yaks, cargo, etc.

Could you Post or PM me the store (if its local)? I'm ready to buy one, just haven't started shopping around.

I've seen the craigslist jet ski trailer guy, he recently upped his prices from $250 to $300 FYI. I'm hesitant to buy a used trailer because it will almost certainly need new tires, bearings, rustoleum, lights, etc....

Jerry I see we had the same idea! Great minds think alike

I used a jetski trailer and added some pressure treated 2x6 boards accross that can be removed with a couple of bolts if I want to use it to tow the skis

I got a set of used landing pads from a friend who is a yakima rep, and mounted them to the boards at the exact same distance as the onew on the truck so I can move the racks from the truck to the trailer depending on how I plan to travel. It takes about 2 minutes total if i have 1 other perso to help move the racks from the trailer to the top of the truck. 5 minutes if by myself. Since I had the roof racks already and the pads were free, and the trailer just needed new bearings (was my dad's neighbor but he never used it and didn't know how to fix it, so I got it for free and he can use it if needed) the cost to me was about 40 dollars total :thumbleft:
