I've got a question heard several answers but would still like to hear what everyone says. What is the preferred knot for tying on a jig head?

Preferred knot or the best knot?

Arun.

I tie either a palomar or improved cinch knot on everything.
I find I tie the palomar when I have the time to pre rig at the house. I tie an improved cinch when I am changing lures on the water.
Its not that its any easier/faster to tie...its that I've used that knot all my life and do it by habit.

One thing I have done though is doubled both knots where they go through the eye. Two loops through dramatically decreases the chance of slippage...esp with braid.

The only other knot I tie is the loop (rapala) knot when using jerkbaits both hard and soft. Also on doa shrimp weightless. It allows a lot more movement and natural wiggle, and is a fairly strong knot when tied right.

I do not think there is a choice for tying on terminal tackle.....Palomar Knot!!

http://www.animatedknots.com/palomar/in ... dknots.com

-or-

http://www.netknots.com/html/palomar_knot.html

Note: When tying on braided or super lines....repeat Step 2 a second time and do TWO OVERHAND LOOPS to allow for slippage!!

Even with my old eyes or in dark conditions, I can tie the Palomar almost from memory.....JohnYaksJax

@arun the best knot I hear loop knots because it gives more action. That's what I use in my mirrodines. Was curious if if was the same for jig heads I'm new to fishing with Artie's

Agree, Loop Knot if looking for action on the lure. Great for a Gulp Shrimp on a very slow retrieve. Otherwise, use the old standard Clinch Knot :thumbleft: Can't remember having a knot fail on me.

Be sure to wet all knots before cinching them

One other thing..... don't be lazy and fish with the same size jig head all day. Change it out between an 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz. They will fish different parts of the water column. When I'm going after trout holding in deeper holes I use 1/4 oz. When fishing for reds/flounder in 1-2 feet water use 1/8 oz. I see people fishing with the same jig head all day long. The only time they change it is when they loose it on a oyster bed :smoke:
