I've recently had the itch to make my own lures. In the past I've used the pre-cut and sanded ready to paint kits but i want to make my own designs. I think it would be a fun little hobby. Has anyone tried and or make their own lures? It would be nice to get some direction.

I thought about it. You could probably make a beter fish look a like lure then mass produced lures. Will you be using cedar?

in my research it said that the most common are balsa, basswood, and poplar. Poplar is cheap and i can get it at a hobby shop in town in pre-cut 1x1 and 2x2 sticks so ill most likely be using that. I have a small table top lathe but my new apartment doesnt have an area that i can use it ill have to take it to work and set it up there. i have an airbrush as well so all i have to get is hardware and paint. ohhhh and maybe some skill i tend to bite off more than i can chew.

remember to run a wire through it with drop loops for your hooks. do not try to screw small rings in as they will fail on you when the lure absorbs a little water. some other supplies that you can use for molding clear heads and bodies is a mix and pour resin (cant think of the name right now) but you can find it at Michaels. It will be a sinking lure but it is neat as you can lay everything up in a mold and pour it. you can even put a profile image of a fish in the mold and pour around it.

I have made offshore lures and been quite successful with them. it really is a good feeling to catch a quality fish on a lure you made.

I have looked into the through wires but ive also seen the hardware epoxied in and the lure its self with 3 coats of epoxy to seal it. im looking to do both. i did just finish my first lure but i hand carved it so its not pretty yet it looks similar to a mirr-o-dine ss minnow

I have made my own for some time. I have an endless supply of old cedar and cypress. The tools you need: Band saw (table top is fine), belt sander (stationary model), drill press (table top model). Instead of drilling a hole through I have found it better to cut a kerf in the lure. Check with "Net Craft" for supplies. The cost for a copy of a typical Mirrorlure for me is about 37 cents (two hooks, ss wire, paint).

Just a suggestion, in foundations of design we were instructed to previsualize and draw our subject at the start of the project. This eliminates many mistakes during production. This has worked for me on just about everything I have ever built.

work smart, C.
