Piggy backed off of what I saw some of you do on here. As usual these were very cheap to build. Under $10 per pole. Now just need to get them wet, going to try them out on Friday AM!

So I see pool noodle and what appearS to be PVC tied into the handle. Did you sleeve the PVC over the the broom handle.

exactly, the 1/2" pvc T joint screwed perfectly onto the metal thread from the broom handle. To tighten it up and lock it in I put one screw through the top of the PVC and into the broom handle. Widdled the opposite end to a nice point and wahla.

the wood will over time rot. You'll get about $10's worth of uses. I have done the same and just switched over to fiberglass. There are some people out there that make them for half the cost of the major brands.

I agree the wood will rot, and oysters will tear it up fast. But its all preference I guess. I started out with 1" PVC then I made one out of Fiberglass rod that i bought from Mcmaster-carr.com it cost $20 total with the CPVC handle. Nice build though :thumbright: and thanks for sharing.

i found a "V" stake out pole at www.aluminumsolution.com. haven't bought it yet but it looks like a quality solution for a less expensive pole. Anyone have one?

question....if the wood broom sticks rot, then why not use a plastic one? too flimsy? too brittle? just curious.

Generally they are hollow so they won't like to stay in the mud due to buoyancy.

Wooden broom and mop handles ROT within about a year..

Plastic mop handles lasted about 2-3 months before they just BENT or BROKE....

PVC answers last a little longer but if you do not "cap" their tips, the clog up with mud..

Other cheap solutions are Golf Drivers with the heads cut off.....and Ski Poles with the baskets removed...and the PVC and wooden and plastic broom handles mentioned above...

Eventually, you will go thru all of them like I did and get a:
1 - Capt. Dicks SOP, which I have had for 5 years and 500 trips...

2- The Hobie knock-off of the above (notice that I did NOT say RIP OFF!!)

3- Stick It Pins and another brand that is VERY good that I cannot recall at 11:30 PM
The S.I.P. are really very good and will PUNCH DOWN THRU OYSTERS to get you staked out and we sell them at BCO!!

All of them work, and some work longer and better than others...and like I did, you will move up the SOP Ladder after awhile!!
JohnYaksJax

PS: Jae....I know you are NOT from N.E. FLA, but our sticky and stanky mud/muck will hold a SOP for hours.....THEY WILL NOT FLOAT OFF after being stuck in the muck!! NEVER!!
Your sand bottoms on the Gulf Coast are much different....

I decided to make my own as well... went to Lowes & purchased a 8' piece of grounding rod, a piece of PVC, a tee & 2 caps, & a stainless shackle... cut the grounding rod to 6', and the PVC to 5'... slid the PVC over the rod, epoxied the end of the PVC, made the t-handle with the tee & caps, and drilled a hole & attached the shackle, then painted it black. simple & easy design and works like a champ. goes through the mud, oysters, and even the hard packed sand areas. total cost was less that $20

papa - sounds like it would be plenty sturdy, think I'm gonna give it a try, tired of fighting anchor line. Two questions though: what diameter pvc did you use and what bonds the grounding rod to the pvc? I assume the epoxy keeps water and mud from getting up into the pvc, but does the shackle bolt go through both the pvc and the rod to provide the strength?

Hey Sam... it was 1/2" PVC. Yes, the shackle bolt went through both the PVC & the rod. I used a 5/16" shackle that was bought at Lowe's as well. I also drilled a pilot hole through the top of the tee handle and screwed a small stainless bolt into it as well to add a little extra. I think it was overkill tho, cuz the shackle through everything seemed to work pretty good. I've had it out for about 10 trips so far, and it's been great. A little weight to it, but definitely gonna last a while, and no worries about it bending, breaking, or snapping. I've used a popular SOP from here and it bent like crazy in some pretty hefty winds down in the Goon, so I know for sure this one won't have that problem.
