This sounds like so much fun I can't wait. I will be bringing the wife and my 11 yr old son along, but they probably won't fish. We are booking a room at the King Fisher tomorrow, look forward to seeing ya'll there!

I know that this is not a Tournament but Gary from the Tackle Box in Gainesville Florida has donated a special prize for the largest fish. If any person fishing from a Kayak in Cedar Key on September 24, 2011 and is under the age of 17 years old, he or she will automatically win the Prize for the largest fish. :)
Minimum weight of the fish is 20Lbs.
Drop by the Low Key and pick up your token which must be in the photo on that date. ;) A photo will do. Do not bring the fish with you at the dinner.

Is the kingfisher offering any discounts if we mention the kayak outing?

For those of you who are coming to Cedar Key on Friday Night the 23rd, you can eat at Robinson's Seafood for $11.95 per person. All You Can Eat. Located 8 mile from Cedar Key in Rosewood. When driving on Hwy 24 when entering Rosewood you can find Robinson's on the right. :drunken:
If there are several of you all interested let me know and I will reserve the private dinning room in the rear. :bounce:
At the present we have 46 peole for Saturday Night Dinner. :sunny:

Forget the Post on Robinson's Seafood. :drunken: I have just been informed that Robinsons will BE CLOSED the entire month of September. :fart4:
There are several of Resturants in Cedar Key so I am sure we will find a great place to eat.
Tony's Seafood has one for the 3rd or 4th time the World Title Chowder.
Sort of pricey but you can eat the chowder and say you have been there. :joker:
See you all at Cedar Key. :salute:

Looking forward to it!

I may actually fish the Jax classic again if I know some folks up there. Was kinda rough not knowing the area and fishing at high tide.

Looking forward to chasing tails in Cedar key.

A few people in here and up in the Atlanta area who are attending, have asked me to post some "fishing spots" and techniques, and I had these stored, so here they are!! You "locals" like ShellMoundAl, Jae, Aaron, etc know would like to chime in and add content are certainly welcome since that is NOT my Home Turf!!!
Thx....JYJ

For the Big Uglies...ALL of them that I know of were caught on chunks of LIVE blue crabs which you can easily catch as needed or buy LIVE ones from local B&T shops...and there are several located close to our places to stay and our fishing spots!! Frozen dead crabs did not produce at all last year!! The rig for them was a fairly stout rod (striper quality) with braid, a float of some sort, a fairly heavy 18" leader, and a 4/0 to 6/0 hook. Most guys cut off the pinchers (be careful!!) and the legs and used them for chum, and then put the hook into one of the "leg stumps" and leave it exposed so it hooks the fish better!!

ALSO: Out in the Gulf around the keys (islands) the best bait for big redfish and small/medium sharks were pinfish which were easily (TOO EASY!!) to catch on small gold hooks and bits of shrimp. The "life expectancy" of a live shrimp on a hook over there was about 30 seconds MAX!!

Here is a link to several places to fish over there that I snagged from a local Cedar Key report:

If you launch on Dock Street , end of road on Hwy 24, you will see a sandy beach. Reserved parking sign in the left will indicate Kayak Loading and Unloading. ;)
Tom Leibert has his Kayak Rentals right next to the launch. If he is there he will show you all the spots to paddle. From the Beach you can go staright to Ocedeode Key. It is the first large Island in front of you. Behind it is Snake Key. A pretty good distance if the wind is up. To the right between Ocedeode and Snake is Grassy Key. Small Grass Island that holds large Trout. :bounce: On to the right of Grassy Key is Seahorse Key. Great Snook, Red, Tarpon, and Trout fishing between Grassy Key and Seahorse. I like to drift it with a Slider or soft plastic. :compress:
All of the locations above are easy access from the beach and all hold Flounder, Reds, and Trout. Snake on the west side is also known for Cobia at certain times. Mackeral are always in somewhere along all the areas I have mentioned. :-B
Deadman Key and North Key are also good places to fish but that would be a pretty long distance to fish and return back to the beach. :shaking2:
The beach is in the downtown district of Cedar Key.
The first Isalnd is pronounced O SEE DEE O DEE. You are now a Local since you know how to pronounce it.
Tom Liebert from" Kayak Cedar Keys" donated $40.00 to our outing. Thank him for his contribution when you meet him. Tom will give you information on where to go from the beach to catch a 40 Lb and larger Big Ugly. If you have never caught a huge Black Drum this is your opportunity. :D The Black Drum feed on the Clams from the Clam Farmers and that is why they are so numerious and large. No good to eat when they are that big but it does make for a great story and a super pictiure . :-B
See you all there and have a safe trip and GOOD FISHING. :sunny: :thumbright: :thumbleft:

Great stuff, Al....and thanks for all the tips and techniques on that post!!

Here is a nice resource for info about Cedar Key, and you can click on this and then click on the "cloud" that says "Maps & Downloads" for printable maps of the area and of those keys that Al mentioned above:

http://www.cedarkeyguide.com

I have a VERY good map that is "semi-waterproof" and is put out by the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. You will go right past the road to it when you travel between Chiefland and Cedar Key on SR347 so maybe you can grab one there or someplace in town??
They are open MON-FRI from 7:30 to 4:00 PM.....not on weekends tho!!
I have this website for them: http://www.fws.gov/cedarkeys
Here is the link for a map and info: http://www.fws.gov/southeast/pubs/ckstear.pdf
More to come later!!
JYJ
PS: THANKS to Tom Liebert for the donation and I certainly hope to see Tom and Sherry at the launch area and for sure at the Cookout...he is a GREAT guy and a huge source of local info!!
