OMG, that was PAINFUL to watch!
We often call that the "sling shot cast" and I've done it many times. But, you MUST grasp the back of the LAST treble hook on the lure, or you're a shishkabob. Last time I saw Shell Mound Al, I was explaining that we sling shot cast flies all the time in what I call "hell hole fishing". Sometimes when you are on a very small stream with willows all around, or a high lake with heavy timber right up to the shore, there's no way to make a backcast. So, you either roll cast it or sling shot it-----no other options are viable.
BTW, got a hook in my finger last year when I was unhooking a small bass. Had to go to the emergency room to have the hook removed by a well-intended doctor and PA who had NO idea what they were doing. Anyway, it was two hours between being hooked and having it removed, and I don't have the foggiest idea why, but it NEVER hurt. Maybe the embarrassment overcame the pain?
