The conditions on the water and the conditions overhead may not be related.

Just a FYI......it happened between the beach acesses of 6th and 7th avenue south where the old peir used to be (6th AVE south). It was also on Friday afternoon at around 4:30 PM.He was in 4ft or less of water. He was walking out into the surf.

The new PIER is on 5th AVE north.Thats 10 blocks to the north. Their are also many sharks up and down are beaches this time of year. Mostly small blacktips and sand sharks, and an occasional bullshark.
You are more likely to get struck by lightening than to get bit by a shark.

Also, i wouldnt go under thpir in anything less than 1ft conditions. Thats equal to about 80% of the days in June and July.

:-B :rr: :salute:

You just don't get it... It is a bad idea... period! You can thumb your nose all you want, but you obviously have no respect for your fellow anglers on the pier or someone elses safety.

This thread seems to be getting alot of attention...(a "tension")
*I'm gonna stir the pudding some more...(This should be funny - I hope you laugh!) :joker:

FACT:
:study: So far, What I have learned about fishing from a Kayak at the Jax Pier is:
- Unneccessary, and overall NOT a good idea
- Will probably get me in trouble with my fellow anglers by pissing them off
- It seems UNsafe due to bad currents, surprise waves, etc... (not to mention - I'll need to wear a helmet to protect myself from flying sinkers/weights!
- (feel free to continue here with a loong list of other bad things)

Well, despite the many concerns given from the fellow anglers on here, and their several advisories against this idea...some people still think it's okay!
For example Yakatac said he saw 'other people' doing it and thinks it's no big deal...(so, you know THAT makes it okay). I felt relieved to hear him say he'd would have NO personal issues with us if we fished under the Pier (I was pretty worried about that)... :silent:

Anyway, if you still want to try Kayak fishing at the Pier...it sounds like he's your man! He seems to know everything...especially since he has been living only a few blocks away since the late 70s.

NOTE: You will probably find him on a longboard early in the morning...(Just look for the grumpy old pier fisherman that are chunking weights at him for no reason)

He seems to recommend the following guidelines:

The yakatac method: :alien:
- 80% of your fishing can be done between June and July
- Only go out early in the Morning, and when the waves are less than 1ft
- Fish directly under pier...about halfway out
- Fishing technique is straight down/verticle...about 10'-20' around the pilings
- Target only 3 species...(Redfish, Trout, and Flounder)

** If you don't follow these guidelines; you will probably end up only catching whiting, pomps, catfish and bonnet head sharks.....(God knows what a terrible day that would be!)

Oh! also, he said dont forget this Fall....when the mullet run starts, it will be absolutely gangbusters!
I think it would be great if we ALL follow his advise and show up for that at the same time...(Imagine 80+ Kayaks contending for position under the Pier...only in the early morning...and remember - there are NO rules to enforce against us) :smoke:

(Not bad for someone who is not tryin to start a pissin match.) :sunny:

I agree with baitfish...this guy just doesn't get it.

(Okay, honestly.....Was this funny?...Did you laugh?)
:santa:

It got a chuckle out of me - especially since I knew it was supposed to!

(I wish my wife would give me such a good clue occasionally. I always seem to laugh at the wrong time.)

Man, you guys are some tuff moody ole kookies. Whats the big deal with getting out at daybreak, no one in sight, NO ONE on the pier, no wave action...for a fun couple of hours of fish catching? Sorry for "offending" the kayak heirarchy. Once again i see no problem with it when its flat and no one is around. When i got my YAK, this is just the reason i got it by the way....is to be able to do things you cant do in a boat, be adventurus (sp), fish places that are not navigable by boat, and do some back country exploring.Im glad the local Kayak police got a good laugh out of it at least.

I guess thats why we all have our own opinions on things.
Have a great weekend everyone and i hope yall catch a bunch of fish this weekend.

Oh, by the way......im only on a longboard when its flat.

Even though you didn't start the original question on this post, you gave several responses to the issue. I had fun with you on this thread.

After all, I'm pretty sure Kingmac got his answer.
*We stayed on subject and didn't hijack. :smoke:

Yes, Good luck to everyone this weekend...(Looks like the GOAL will be to catch our limit of fish BEFORE it rains)!
