He ate a live pogie on one of my tarpon rigs. A cajun thunder with 80lb fluoro and a 14/0 circle hook :toothy7:

He was mouth hooked so long as I had pressure on him his teeth didnt touch the leader. It was a bit abraided. If I was hunting for kings I'd use a wire rig with some trebles, not what he hit.

Question,
Caught a few Kings that size from a boat only landed one half that size from a Yak but used a lip grip in all cases or a tail loop if lucky learned in NC in the Outer Banks used for toothy fish! Do you really need to gaff that size from a Yak? Not questioning your many many years of Jax Fishing experience just curious? Would 60lb braid hold up or destroy your gear  Way too many break offs this year on Mono...

Thank you for all the great fishing tips Mike
The website is top notch.

I have a hand gaff but didnt bring it as I wasnt targeting kings. That is actually the gaff from the Nutt Deep boat that came up on me. I traded them the king for some pics so they gaffed it. I wouldnt have a gaff that large on a yak ;)

somewhere on here I believe Capt Ken posted a DIY on making a "flying gaff". It's a hook with a line attached to it that comes off the end of a pole after you gaff the fish. It allows you to gaff the fish and tie it off on the yak, with the ability to release it if things get out of hand. A hand gaff could pull you in if you have it attached to your wrist and the fish is greener than you thought.

Overweight, no way Mike. I was lying on the beach earlier this week and fell asleep due to the heat on the water's edge. Next thing I knew I was being lifted up by several of the Save the Whales volunteers and they were trying to get me back in the water! :D

Great story and pics. I saw a couple of yaks way offshore on the south side of Amelia Island yesterday afternoon and one looked like he had a good fight going on.

Nice fish!
