I've been a Gainesville resident (ACR) for about ten years now. Went to cedar key quite a few times fishing off bridges and piers. Last week I made my first trip to shell mound with a borrowed kayak. Caught some cats but was excited to do it again. I'm planning on heading out on WEDS and renting a kayak from town. Would like to know which key's are worth the paddle. Plan on using live shrimp and maybe some gulp. I guess if no one responds by weds I'll be the guy paddling around shell mound all day long trying to get a red to bite...

Not a lot of folks on here fish that side, so it might be a while for a response.

Try to PM Shell Mound Al. He is on this website and fishes that area.

hey man. I live in chiefland. Go out around the first island off the beach (Atsena Otie Key). Start off on the left hand side of the island. The left side and the back are covered with grass flats. Its about 1 mile off the beach. The island behind Astena Otie Key is called Snake key. Its about 1.5 miles more and the water should be more clear. Snake key is also covered with grass flats. Shell mound is a good place to fish untill everything gets too hot. Do you have a map of Cedar key?

Hey jaeforceone....Welcome to JKF and thanks for the post!!

Good info by the guys above...also:

In addition to Shell Mound Al (who actually lives in Gainesville also!!), you said you are renting a kayak, so contact Tom at Kayak Cedar Keys (Search on that in here) since Tom runs the kayak rental concession right there at to the left of the main pier area...you will see all his kayaks parked right there too!!

Contact him ahead of time, and he should be able to meet you and get you on the water very quickly....and he will point you to Atsena Otie that Billabong909 mentioned above. Here is the link to his website, and his name, phone #, and email addy are at the bottom of that page!!

http://www.kayakcedarkeys.com/index.php

There were 6 of us over there last week, and the main "target" wound up being "Big Uglies"....VERY large black drum....get some blue crabs for them!!! Don't remember anyone catching a redfish, and Josh (15 y/0) caught two trout to 19" I believe...Tight Lines!!

Good luck and post up a Fishing Report and some pix too!!

The seas are predicted to be between 2.3-3.3 foot tomorrow so be careful if you decide to tour around the islands in the yak. Shell mound might be a better choice for ya. If you launch from SM at the little beach area and go to your left towards the gulf you can find some nice oyster bars and grass lines. You will be protected from the wind/waves there. Here are the tides for 06/30/2010 Wed 05:17AM LDT 3.4 H 10:51AM LDT 1.5 L 04:32PM LDT 3.9 H 11:22PM LDT 0.4 L . Be careful at low tide in shell mound. I would either launch at 7 am and fish till 4, or I would launch at 1 and fish till 7-8. You just dont want to be around the pier area at low tide.

thanks for all the tips and information guys! you guys can really make a guy feel at home with a newfound passion for kayak fishing. Today was an eventful day; weather was supposed to be crap, swells were supposed to be crap, BUT weather was okay (light rain early afternoon, Sunny all afternoon), Swells were almost nothing. As for me and my friends, we caught CATFISH...a ladyfish, and one small whiting.

THANK YOU TOM for the kayak dilema, sorry you couldn't make it out to your business thing but at least you got my business!

Saw some tailing black drums....I need help on how to exactly approach (ie. distance, sound, bait, etc) because I either spooked the fish by getting too close or getting my hook stuck on the oyster bar after a cast.

Now I gotta go look for a kayak I can call my own. any suggestions?

Blue Crab!! Since you are from Gainesville, West Coast Seafood on Waldo Rd. just north of University Ave. has live ones for like $2.49/lb. Or you can catch some there at Shell Mound pretty easily, but we found tailing drum before we got to our crab catching location and were S.O.L...
