ive noticed hook and line fishermen often bear some resentment towards spearfisher .i do both . ive often had anglers say to me when i tell them i spearfish 'well thats alot easier that way isn't it'. my reply is "easier than sitting in a chair drinking a beer and winding the handle of a winch?" while spearing does allow you to select which fish you want its far from easy especialy freediving.Diving down to 70' holding your breath and trying to convince a cobia to return to the surface with you is ALOT more challenging than anything ive experience with a rod and reel. even spearing with scuba involves you actually participating in the food chain .i can tell you from experince playing zoro with a 7" foot nurse shark for 10 minutes or playing keep away with a half dozen bull sharks and a hog snapper beats any adrenaline rush produced by a fish peeling line off of a reel.

Not sure what kind of response your looking for on this website :dontknow: If I go 4" below the surface of the water, my self-inflatable PFD will inflate and I will be bobbing like a cork :bounce:

To each his own in the sport of their choosing :salute:

Spearfishing off a kayak :thumbleft:

Spearfishing out of a boat :angryfire:

Its more of a sport to me to get the fish to eat rather then shoot one. Don't get me wrong I love shooting things, but a fish...:smoke:

As long as you aren't using Dupont Spinners, it doesn't matter to me one way or the other how you take your limit.
Spear em all you like.

i also spearfish freediving and with scuba. i disagree though as to the spearing is far more exciting than peeling line off a reel. they are both exciting in their own ways. stalking a redfish and getting him to eat and having him peel line is great just as slowly and calmly approaching either an open water fish or a reef fish that is playing hide and seek with youand finally getting a shot off on it and having him rip you through the water is also quite thrilling, as is feeding a lure to a lit up 400+lb marlin and having him get airborne 20 feet from the back of the boat and not stop till he has run 500 yards of line off your reel is hard to explain the feeling. as a sportsman i think we all have our pssions but what it all comes down to is the feeling of being at one with nature and sometimes coming out the winner and sometimes being humbled no matter which method you choose.

as for the zoro with the nurse shark, a firm punch to the nose or a grab of the tail and he is gone. but when it comes to bull sharks versus the hogfish, the only sport i see there is how fast i can swim away from the hogfish that the bull shark is fully entitled to. :notworthy:

greg some fisherman really don't like spearfisherman, can't really figure out why that is ? each way of bringing home dinner can be equally as challenging. i have a few friends who freedive and spear very frequently but, when they aren't doing that they're fishing and are darn good at it :thumbright: i dont think you'll find to much dislike in the kayak community because you really cant spearfish in water where you can't see your hand in front of your face  some people say that spearing fish is way too easy but i'
d love to see those guys out there put down the rod and beer and try and swim down to 70' for any length of time without anything but a single breath of air!

I have a few old Sea Hornet wood guns, shafts etc. .... wanna buy them? I am sure in my 10 years of spearfishing (Tampa area in the 1970s) I was not "more" thrilled than bringing a blue marlin to my boat, dehooking him safely, reviving him and releasing him. Hogfish were the most boring fish in the world to spear, .. but great eating. They used to swim up and turn sideways as if to say "right here buddy!"

So long as it's not illegal or immoral rock on. Just don't spear anything big enough to eat you if it gets mad. :D

On a boat that we dove off of out of Ft Lauderdale, the dive master went to check the anchor at 110 ft freediving. I was impressed!

I'm a diver and can appreciate the physical effort of diving, now free diving, that is a whole other ball game. Good on ya man! Anyone who sys that is not sporting has not tried it. Just ask that person to hold his breath for 90 seconds let alone 3-4 minutes.

I'll answer this truthfully since you asked....sorry to stop the love fest

Not a big fan. Many of the spear guys in Miami wear rebreathers and wipe every grouper off a given reef in one day.
