Been in the Destin area the past few days. Had a trip planned up with my buddy Jesse and Capt Carey Griffith to do a little nearshore livebait fishing - something I haven't done in a while. We had a blast! This guy really had the numbers - all fish caught within 2 miles of the beach in around 70 ft of water, live and dead baits. These were the ones we kept - we got bit constantly, all trip & probably released 50+ red snapper (legal) and 3 or 4 more grouper between the two of us and this was only a 4 hour trip total, only 3 of which was bottom fishing. We just trolled around for the kingfish the last hour. Not a tarball in sight and who says the red snapper stocks are down!!

Very cool! My oldest daughter lives over that way (Crestiview). Looks like I need to schedule a trip to see her (and your guide).

Sweet! :thumbright:

I've always wanted to go over to the gulf and fish for red snapper from the yak. :)

Barry, stop by the house one day & I'll give you one of his cards.

Bill, it would have been NO problem to do that. I couldn't believe how close we were to the beach!

What a beautiful catch. I wonder how far out you would really have to paddle to get to them.

  Not lying...we were less than 2 miles from the beach. EASY paddle from the beach - I probably could have swam it if I had to.

Well GASMAN, unfortunately you were able to make one of the last runs out of Destin. My future father-in-law informed me yesterday that they officially closed the Destin Pass up there. There goes my hope of some 4th of July weekend fishing up there when we go visit... Let's hope the booms can keep it out of the bay and the harbor at least...

Bummer, I was thinking of heading to Destin for the second half of my trip when I leave St. Auggie around the 4th myself. Is fishing still open on the ocean there?
