Con'd my neighbor into fishing with me today, forgot to tell him it was going to be an Airborne Ranger
hump it day till I find fish. Started at White Shell, 6:30 a ship passes by, sucks me and all the water out to the River.
I get caught in the outgoing sunami, crash off the rocks and rip my rudder clean off. All I can say is thank God it was high tide.
I convince Thomas to cross the River, so we fight the outgoing tide and hit a creek over there, 2 hours later, NADA.
Next stop was West Chicopit, we float down with the tide, cut into the Creek and have a 20 mph wind and outgoing current into our face.
What else would you expect when you fish with me?
We paddle for 30 minutes to go a mile and wouldn't you know it, a boat is in my spot. OK, let go to my secondary spot.
One exhausting hour later, we make it!

I finally put us on some fish after about 6 miles of of wind, sun and current.
I then have my 2nd Kenocident, I hook a damn catfish, carefully grab the sucker and he
nails me good. When I pull his fin out of my hand, blood is spurting 6 inches in the air.
I did get the bleeding to stop a little while later, and was ready to return to White Shell.
We fight the wind and incoming tide back out, then coast half way across the River with the tide,
then freaking tide changes to outgoing, which pushes us all the way back towards Sisters Creek!
I would guessimate it took a solid hour to cross the River, fight wind and current to get back to White Shell.
Who wants to go fishing with me next?

And he wonders why I ended up buying a South African made kaskazi dorado. :D

At least you ended up with some nice reds. :thumbright:

Good story and "lessons learned" there Ken. I have made that cross a few times with Koby and I HATE it.....won't do it again.

Glad you caught some fish and wish I could have been there. Gonna get a line wet when I come home in late July!

Ken I have had that exact same thing happen and it is quite the surprise. You are thinking the wake of a huge container ship is going to push you towards shore but what happens is it is pushing a wave of water in FRONT of the ship before it gets there, and that wave rebounds off the shore and heads towards the CHANNEL, breaks over the rocks, and if you are outside (in the river side) of the rocks you will be sucked back towards the rocks when that rebound wave breaks over the rocks.

That's why it "appears" they have no trailing wake! It's all out ahead of the boat. Imagine in a owrst case scenario you are fishing alone, this happens to you, kayak tips, you bang your head on the rocks, and you are done :( The river can be very dangerous even in the most innocent looking spots.

But looks like you were ultimately rewarded, so good job dude!

Guess he is still your neighbor, but is he still YOUR FRIEND??? LOL!!!

Amazing story and glad you did not get tip or flip or get hurt going over those rocks!!
Good thing is that the "Airborne Ranger Training Session" DID payoff in some nice quality redfish, so Congrats!!
