I just bought a canoe last weekend. It is a MoHawk Blazer17. I have a buddy that has a pungo 14' yak. He is the one that turned me on to wanting a canoe. I am a 6'6" and about 250. Thats why I decided on a canoe vs a kayak. My question is, my buddies kayak has all types of accessories. Do they make accessories for canoes or do I just have to get creative and make up my own rigs? By the way, went out for the first time last week and loved it. Caught all kinds of fish. From Reds to Trout to Puppy Drum. Can't wait to get back out on the water.

I've got a Pungo 140 that I use a lot for paddling, camping, etc. but have never fished from it. I use a sit-on-top for fishing. I've never fished from a canoe, and haven't used one for years. But you can add rod holders and storage systems to anything. I just don't know about canoes. I think you could add rod holders - Scotty or Ram are the two popular brands - but the type of mount might be different on a canoe. A good dealer could help there. For instance, most bases require a fair-sized flat area to mount, but your canoe may need a different type of gunnel mount to be useful. As for storage, milk crate (or file crates) are popular because they are cheap, durable, plastic, and can be easily modified to your needs. And I think most of the rigging advice you'll find on this site suggests doing a little at a time as you use the canoe and detemine what kind of stuff you find useful. Look at some of the rigging pictures and you'll get ideas.

And good luck with it.

Im not sure, but I dont know anyone on this site that fish from a Canoe ( maybe thats why no one responded  )

I have no idea where to start with a canoe, because I never considered fishing from one.

Scotty makes just about any accessory you will need for rod holders and such.. (where you place them is up to you)

Everything else is just fishing gear..................... :D

Good Luck!!!!

Hey Dreads that Native of yours for all practical purposes is a shallow sided canoe. I grew up fishing canoes and got sucked into kayaks back in 2005, then I found Wavewalk right about that time and never looked back. Currently I have a fleet of three canoes, a Grumman 13 here in Florida, a Browning Aerocraft in Indianapolis, and a Grumman Sport Canoe in Ft Wayne IN. Of all paddle craft the canoe might well be the most universal. A good one will outlast many anglers and is long term in the case of the Grummans I know of some from the 1950's that are still on the water. Pier 17 Marine in JAX has been a Grumman dealer for years and should have canoe related items for you. I kept my rods supported on the center bar of my Grumman 13 with the tips on a PVC rack in front of the bow seat. A large cooler was on my side of that bar and then a tackle bag. I used either a bent shaft graphite glass paddle or a double canoe paddle made by Mohawk with T grips if regular paddles were needed. Over the years canoes got us to loads and loads of fish. You might find it's all you ever need to get on the water.

There are a few guys over on The Hole who fish from lightweight canoes. They even have a forum dedicated to fishing from kayaks. Ask some questions over there and I'm sure they'd be more than glad to help you out.

Check out Chethro's ride, weighs less than 30 lbs and paddles way better than most SOT kayaks out there. :)

I'm new here and I fish from a 14.6 canoe. You can put anything you want on your canoe. I have even put a pair of oars on mine. Most of the rod holders can mount horizontally or vertically and many clamp on the side of the gunnel or you can bolt them on. The coated wire-formed are inexpensive and easy to configure anyway you want.

Hey mohawk, sorry for not responding, I don't use kayak rigging so I never look at this part of the forum. I fish out of a canoe. It is not tricked out like the one in the pics above. Fact of business, I have a 1978 15.5' fiberglass mohawk. I made a datachable raised seat and transum. I get enough exercise at work, dont need to paddle, I use a trolling motor for propulsion. I carry two marine batteries and have about a ten mile range. I also carry an 8' push-pole. I use mud flaps on the floor, it cuts way down on the noise and protects my floor. Mikey was dead right about using the plastic coated springs for rod holders, I have four of them. If you are wondering if they are strong enough, take a look at my post this week, that 25# drum hit on a combo that was sitting in one of those springs. The great thing about a canoe is the more weight you put in them, the more stable they become. I do a great deal of standing in mine, it takes some getting used to, but not too bad. A seat back is a must and so are the rod holders, Thats what I would start on. I'm not at home now, but will try to take a few pics of mine this week and post them here.

fish on my friend, C.

As you can see, these pics were taken at the end of a trip, sorry its not a little cleaner. None the less, there she is and she serves me well. The seat will turn 360 degrees so I can fish behind me without having to spin the canoe. My favorite fishing hole is about 2 miles from the launch, I usually motor to the area and pole the rest of the day until its time to return. Again, its pretty stable so I can stand and do a lot of site casting without turning it over. Then again, I have been standing in it for nearly 30 years so its kind of second nature. The rod holders are not very sophisticated but if used correctly they rarely miss a fish. They also turn about
120 degrees horizontally. I carry about 150 pounds of gear(tm, batts, cooler, ect.) and can take one passenger on top of that no problem. Because it has a trolling motor I had to register it, but without a motor you do not.
Hope this helps, if you have anymore questions, pm me.

afloat, C.

I no longer have the canoe. I upgraded to a Malibu Stealth 14. Thanks for the replies though.
