I catch several Cobia from my yak over here in the CR/YT area every year and do not really target them. They are targets of opportunity. I catch most by accident while targeting Redfish or Tarpon but occasionally see one and cast to him. My biggest yak caught Cobia was probably 60# or so. I released it because I didn't particularly want to end my trip at 0630.

In my area, Cobia fishing is best when the water is clear. While I have caught them in really muddy water, clear water works best for me both for seeing them and catching them.

Cobia will eat anything. I once caught one with 5 sea turtles in his belly and many have sting rays in them. They will eat anything that will fit inside their mouth and are seldom bashful about eating. They are a P.I.T.A. to unhook from a Zara.

I use a small, home made flying gaff for Cobia. If you intend to keep one, a billy club is definitely in order, especially in a yak.

In the years I chartered, I targeted Cobia every day in the summer, spring and fall. They were a really consistent warm water fish for me and usually the biggest fish in the box most days.

BTW, live bait is best but I catch a lot of them while soaking a Mullet head for Tarpon.

If you want to catch a Cobia, come over here and I'll put you on one.
