As some of you know I purchased a new to me Phoenix 140 from Dreads last month...

Image

Well, to make a long story short I was looking online for some accessories to put on this kayak when I came across a good deal with free shipping on a new P140. :) After thinking about it for a few weeks, and making sure it wasn't a shop that sold the Hobie Stake Out Pole (I won't buy from anyone who sells it after Hobie stole the design from Capt Dick), I went ahead and took the plunge and ordered it. I placed my order on a Monday morning, got a call Mon afternoon about the order, an email about shipping on Tues, and finally a phone call Wed morning telling me my kayak was ready to pick up. :D

The kayak in it's shipping cover, looks mummified...

Take off the cover and there's this black thing...

It's another wrap...

Pull off this wrap and...

Time to start drilling some holes now and get this puppy rigged. :D

Comparing the new one with the first gen one you can see some of the design change. The older model has a little more rocker and volume in the bow...

Rocker at the stern...

And rudder mount in the new vs. none in the old...

Tankwell and seats haven't changed much...

That looks like a great boat, BNZ. Congrats on your new addition to the fleet. Now it just needs a big 01 on the side and the General Lee will live on!

Hey BNZ/Bill.....That new version of the P-140 sure is a pretty kayak!!!

Those side by side comparisons were interesting and it appears that the brand new one is sleeker and should slip thru the water better.
Also, is the NEW version less weight than the older one?? It sure appears to be less volume and material in the bow and stern!!

Congrats!!! Now, get her rigged and then get her "baptized" with some GA Fish Slime!!

John,

The difference between the two really is in how the top half is mated to the lower half. With the newer models, they created a channel for the top half to sit on the lower half. They did take out a little of the rocker too. The difference will be that the newer models will be a little more streamlined for flat water paddling, but in losing that volume in the bow and some rocker, won't punch through the surf or turn as well (even though on these kayaks they are still more than capable :) ).

The weight is the same. One of the reasons I went with the Hurricane Phoenix kayaks is that they are light (52 lbs on these P140's), tough, and good paddling/performing kayaks. These two will eventually be my backup/sheepshead/flats fishing/daughters/guest and possibly tripletail fishing kayaks.

One thing is for sure, I'm going to have fun rigging them. Already have a new rudder and gas pedal type rudder control for the green one to install. Heck, might even have to get me a new ONNO paddle now too. :thumbleft:

Congratulations on the new 140. I've had my 130 for a year and a half now. Can't think of anything I'd rather have but maybe a 140. Ya think they would have figured out how to put paddle holders on them by now though.

For on the side paddle holders buy a couple of nylon over the door towel hooks from Wal-Mart. You want the light gray ones with the little blueish lip on them. For sit on top boats trim off the squared off door hook section and then drill a small hole in the flat piece above the hook area. A cord of proper size is attached and the hooks will thne hang on the side of the yak at whatever height you need, adjust cord as required. This rig makes a nice drop in hook arrangment for the kayak. I use the hooks without trimming on my W500 for the same purpose. Here are a few shots of them on my Wavewalk.

That looks like one of Capt. Kens projects :D

Bill, not sure if you remember this previous link when I rigged my 130. Just in case topic8096-15.html?hilit=phoenix%20130

If I had to do it over again would use the same rod holder approach.

Like I've said before..... those are just to damn pretty to be a fishing kayak

Jerry, I am going with the flushmount Scotty's and will probably put one ram ball up front too.

The old shock cord and hook paddle holders near the kayak handles on the side have always worked well for holding my paddles and stake out poles.

Be sure that the flush mounts are capped. They make two versions. One is capped and the other is open. That's reminds me..... I need to get inside mine and find a rubber cap/plug for the one that is open :D

I really like the color you bought. I was looking at the lime green but when I saw the gold/orange I liked both. Mine is now two years old and the top still looks like new. Can't believe how well the Trylon holds up. Don't tell anyone but I put a coat of wax on the top the other day :gossip: Just like it came out the store

Jerry, just be careful putting 303 Protectorant on it, you might slip right on off the thing. I don't think Scotty makes the uncapped version anymore. At least that's what I thought Stan at Capt Dick's told me when I bought four new ones from him the other day. :thumbright:

These are the ones I bought, except with the flushmount holders...
