I had a very short window of opportunity to fish the last two and a half hours of daylight on Sunday after my kids basketball games so I took advantage of it. There have not been many opportunities with the weather of late so I thought I better go for it. I knew there was not much time for paddling so I chose some sheltered water off Heckshear where I could get to fishing fairly quickly.

I picked up some shrimp to soak but planned to throw my arties to work on improving my game before the upcoming Forgotten Coast and JKF Tournaments. I picked a puppy drum on a shrimp within the first 10 minutes but then things went cold (literally and figuratively). I took a phone call form JYJ and gave him the news that the fishing was slow. I gave up on this favorite spot and moved some nice incoming tide current I saw around a bend.

I pulled out my Mirrodine suspending twitch bait and gave it toss up current and moved it back nice and slow. I got a few bumps and figured the trout had to be there. I changed my retrieve to more of a short slash low to the later with my rod tip and I started catching trout. I caught 5 between 15-18" during my last 40 minutes on the water along with one last puppy drum on the shrimp.

It was not a banner day but 6 fish in the last 40 minutes salvaged a pretty good couple hours on the water. All tout were released to be caught another day. It just felt good to be out again. The fish were picky. I fished the same spot with live shrimp on a float rig, gulp curly tails and DOA shrimp without a bite. For some reason they wanted that Mirrodine and it is becoming my favorite new lure. I am looking forward to working more with it when the water warms this spring.

Hey Ron.....Thanks for the Text on my cell, but unfortunately I did not get it until I was off the water and re-packing my car.....including stuffing a SKUNK IN MY TRUNK!!!

The "Fish Gods" were kind to you since you did the family thing...Go to the game!!

Nice results for a short and late trip!!

Good to see you could get out there and take advantage of one of the few windows of opportunity this winter weather has given us. Also good to see it paid off with some decent fish to boot!

I am also becoming a real fan of the mirrodine and thats a lot to be said for a "bait chunker".
