thinking about going to fish guana on friday, the wind is supposed to be pretty light but there is a 60 percent chance of rain=(.
i was wondering which side to fish? latest reports from the river have been good. just wondering what bait is good? i have acces to plenty of blue crab that could be quartered?? also heard that you can get stranded pretty bad on the river side. any tips would be greatly appeciated.=) thanks

try to go a couple hours before low-plan to stay until 4-5 hours and the tide should be high enough-negative tides can be a little muddy!-I like the river side (south of the dam)-like anywhere else, target the oyster beds, creek mouths, etc-have caught fish on both sides-DOA paddle tail, fishbites shrimp and paddletails, gulp jerkbaits rigged weedless, live shrimp or crab quarters will all catch fish-

Quartered blue crabs should find you some reds on either side. I would throw arties on the lake side for trout as well. I like to use gulp curly tails and doa paddle tails there for trout. Beware of fishing the river side at low tide if you plan to get out before the tide comes back in. You can get stranded there at low tide.

Hey Flats1041.....Our old friend G4VPM/Andy knew Guana River as well as anyone and he always said to just "ADD one hour to whatever the Mayport Tides are"
(It has been nearly perfect for me for the past 30 or more trips!!)

Look up above here to the right of the JKF Logo and click on "TIDES" in all caps....
That link is preset for Mayport, so just use those tide and ADD one hour to them:

For tomorrow: The 12:04PM Low on that link would then be 1:04 PM.....close enuff anyway!!

A "0.0" Low Tide is no problem at the launch. The bottom is pretty firm, even during a "normal" Low Tide, but Negative Low Tides can be a problem at the launch area.

The fish there haven't been too interested in large baits, lately. I've tried a little bit of everything. Smaller size shrimp & mud minnows under a float, fiddlers, and small gold spoons have worked for me there while the water has been cold. Dark colored soft plastics worked [on the bottom] will get strikes right now, but be prepared for lots of snags if you're not familiar with the area. Get out there during Low Tide so you can see where all the oysters are. There are oyster bars where you might not expect to see them, even out in what looks like the middle of the river. Float rigs will be alot less aggravating. Adjust your leader length to avoid snags.

Good Luck!

For Guana, I would recommend Dupont Spinners, nothing else seems to work there.

The term refers to fishing with dynamite. In the "old days" Dupont was a manufacturer of dynamite. Some folks used it Illegally to drop in a body of water and and the resulting shock wave from the explosion would stun or kill the fish. The fish were then just plucked from the top of the water and taken. Kind of the opposite meaning of sportsman.
I think he was pulling your leg.

That estimate of adding one hour a Mayport (or St Augy inlet for that matter too) is just about right. Here is a tide website for Palm Valley area. At the 210 Palm Valley Bridge it’s just about the middle between St Augy and Mayport. For fishing Palm Valley add 2 hours of either Mayport or St Augy tide and you’ll be right on the money.

For example today’s high at Palm Valley is at 10:21 a.m. while the same high at the Mayport (Bar Pilot Dock) is at 8:11 a.m.

The tides are pretty much right on with just a little variance with this website.

Guana Lake is a waste of time in the winter when it gets cold like it is now. Yeah, you might find a straggler Red of Black Drum, and maybe a handful of small trout. It's far better in the spring.

Also, be careful as the upper end is now open to hunters targeting waterfowl.

You can always pull something out of the river with a gulp shrimp or a live muddie on a small egg sinker. Launch as the tide is beginning to drop and return at the flood. I've seen people get stranded--Guana is one place where you need to "ride the tide."
