Why do so many people like to use D.O.A lures? isnt gulp better? i mean its biodegradable, its got an amazing scent that fish love, theres a lot more variety, and you get more for the money. Im not saying that D.O.A stinks but i was just wondering

I use them both but for different applications. I have to agree that when I am jigging along the bottom it is hard to beat good old gulp. I like to use the D.O.A. shrimp in the middle of the water column. I like to cast them into the current and twitch them along with the current. I have had good success on both. The more options you have the better you will do in different conditions.

I use both depending on the application. Sometimes the Gulp gets them, sometimes they prefer the DOA.

IMHO Gulp! is bait and a DOA is a lure.

Also, you mentioned "you get more for your money"

...I've been using the same DOA shrimp for 6 months and still catching fish on it.

Also DOA doesn't stink and the tails don't get bit off.

Gulp! is pretty expensive for bait (again, I consider it "bait"). I'd rather buy fresh shrimp, pack em' in kosher salt, and keep them in the fridge. They'll last several months in your fridge and you can take what you need for your trip if you keep em' in the cooler. Plus the salt hardens em' up real nice. I used to do the same with cut squid cut into neat little pennants.

(I write this with a giant bucket of Gulp! shrimp in my fishing closet - it is convenient when the bait shop is closed - but that's how I see it, a substitute for shrimp on a jighead).

Two different products. DOA is one tough plastic lure and will last thought a bunch of fish. Gulp is processed fish food and it can get torn to shreds by pin fish and crabs so at times it gets real expensive. I've used both and at least since early last summer have sworn off Gulf use because of the expense. The DOAs that I went back to after developing a serious Gulp addiction have proven themselves many times over since then.

Well, heres a testimonial: Last week I caught twenty or so trout on a DOA shrimp under a cork.
This week I caught 3 rat reds, 4 trout on 1 gulp, (new penny color, on an eigth ounce jighead, fished slowly on the bottom). Like others have said, you use either whatever the situation calls for. The float rig doesnt get hung up as easy, but didnt work in the hurricane force winds we had saturday!! I hate to spend 6 bucks for the Gulp, you can buy the 9 pack of DOA shrimp for the same or less and they will last a very long time barring snags. I fish the DOA on a jighead also, they work very well. You can also add weights and rattles to the DOA!!! there are holes already there for them.

i mainly use DOA when out fishing and as long as u got a couple glow shrimp and gold/glow cal shad tails in your box theres nothing you can't catch plus you will save money compared to gulp

Sorry to keep chiming in on this one...

The one thing I can consistently catch on Gulp! shrimp that I can't catch on artificials (besides Pinfish) are nice-size Margate/White Grunts and keeper Mangrove Snapper.

Once you get hooked on Gulp, its like you cant use anything else. And like any other addiction, it can get very expensive. :D

DOA is cheaper........ :happy3:

Like Dreads said gulp can be an addiction so I will take my first step and admit that I have a problem. Just kidding. I do use both but when West Marine was consolidating stores last year in preparation for opening the big flagship store they were clearing out gulp for just over a buck a bag. I loaded up and I still have a good 15 bags of various color curly tails in my stock. Get the gulp on sale or clearance if you can find it. Gander Mountain will throw up a clearance table with it every now and then too. That stuff works but it can be pricey. I also have success with the DOA shrimp and paddle tails.

Have both. Have used both. Still prefer live shrimp. ;)

Use the artis to find the fish but once you find them switch to live shrimp. :thumbleft: Heck, I've even been known to use real shrimp in the same way you would an arti, just hook them the right way and cast away. :)

I think we stated before (long time ago) that, I do just the opposite. I use live bait to find the fish, then I switch to Arties... :D

See guys.......................................... Theres no right or wrong way, just the way your confident in, and whats successful for you.
