This came up in discussion on another post. As it has been a while since I originally posted this I thought I might do again for some of the newer members. This system works extremely well. You can operate (raise/lower) it with one hand and without rope/rode laying all over the kayak.

Here is picture of reel mounted inside the kayak. The spool has a tension spring inside that allows the rode to automatically rewind itself.

This is what you have coming out the kayak.

I have mounted a Scotty anchor mount on the front of the kayak that I run the rope/rode through.

Thanks for the reminder, Jerry. I've been meaning to add that one to my Christmas list... :santa:

Very nice! Thanks for the ideas. This forum is great. I searched your old posts and saw this. I also saw how you added some floating rode to make it easy to lift the anchor out while being stowed. Very cool.
I am not yet ready to drill but am gathering intel :pirate: Looking at all of rigging ideas presented here, decide on ways that suits my needs.
Will the down rigger weight stop you in all but heavier winds and current or does it drag pretty much all the time?

Doggone! I remembered your anchor reel yesterday and planned to e-mail you to see how it is holding up in salt water. I kinda figured the salt would eat the spring up. Automatic fly reels last about 3 trips in the salt.

Q. Can you rinse the reel's internals?

Interesting idea. I remember these from my years in the midwest. Everyone had to have them on their bath tub style bass boats at the time. They worked well, the only reservation is the damage salt can do without proper care. How much do they weight now?

They only weigh couple of pounds, if that. Like I said in above post... It's been almost three years and the saltwater hasn't bothered it yet. Had another reel on another kayak and it worked fine also. Since you are mounting the reel inside your kayak it is not exposed to the salt air. The opening where the rope/rode comes out will collect salt/corrosion. You need to keep it clean by putting a little Corrosion X on it every once in a while.

If it worked on bathtub bass boats, don't see why it wouldn't work on bathtub kayaks :D :D :D
