Happy Independence Day, especially to all our former and current veterans!!

I am embarrassed to say that I "copied" this from Sam (slp053) from the GeorgiaKayakFishing site....but since it is SO GOOD, and I do NOT know how to duplicate it, here ya go:

Nice thread JYJ! I echo that sentiment ... how does the saying go?

If you can read, thank an English teacher.
If you are free to read this in English, or what you are reading is critical of the government, or you are reading something obtained through the Freedom of Information Act ... then thank a soldier.

Happy 4th everyone ... especially any ex/active Army Infantry types! (Gotta say that in a Navy town!!) Be safe!

Good thread and link.

Having been enlisted and then an officer in the Army and now teaching right outside of Fort Stewart, the soldiers and other military are never far from mind but today particularly brought it all to mind. I am a re-enactor at Fort King George in Darien, we always do a 4th of July program with musket and cannon firing etc. While it might seem odd to celebrate at a British fort dressed out as a British soldier you have to remember that this for was active in the early 1700s, well before the Revolution. Every hour when we do the drill for the people a portion of the Declaration of Independence is read out loud.

Anyway, today (besides being brutally hot) was particularly good as we had a number of soldiers and their families come through the fort. These are guys stationed at Stewart who are home from the last tour in Iraq and training to be back again soon. Having a lot in common we would get a chance to talk over the watermelon and lemonade between drills and it always strikes me that military is military- no matter the branch, the year, etc. Much of what these guys are doing now is similar to my time in the service. But much is different- the average number of tours for the guys I talked to was 2 with a few 3s and another coming up quickly. While they are soldiers, the same goes for the Marines, airmen and sailors. Keep them in mind during these times and when you get a chance not only thank them but do what you can to make their day a little better.
