I fly fished today for one of the first times in a while and did it at one Jim Holland's favorite spots, rest his soul. He must have been looking down upon me as I was very lucky and in the hour I was there, I caught 5 and one large fish got away just before I got him close, breaking off my favorite black clouser.

In my ignorance of fish, other than reds, flounder, trout, and a few others, what I caught was a mystery to me.

The first fish was brown with darker brown spots, long with a set of sharp teeth. Looked on line to the various links to see what it was, but no luck.

The other 5 were all the same, but getting bigger with each catch until the final broke off. They were thin, ovalish with blue strips going up and down the sides.

I know that most people fishing know what they are catching, but did not grow up here, was more of a fresh water guy. If anyone knows what they were, it would be helpful. If it helps for a near location, it was near the Vilano Boat ramp. Now most people that had fished with Jim probably know exactly where it is. Any help on identification would be appreciated.

Hello BayView3.....Thanks for the post and Congrats on having a good day on the Longrod!!

I am also a Jim Holland pupil (RIP, JIM!!!) and one time we got into a few Mangrove Snapper:

The Juvies are inshore and are really scrappy fighters....and they have those sharp canine teeth too!!

Were they 10-14" long?? That is about what we see inshore this time of year...???

Must be what they were, still stumped on the first catch. The snapper did tear up my clousers, shredded them matter of fact. The first fish was basically tiger spotted, almost ell like with fins and a set of teeth like a saw. Had yellow underneath his chin.

Anymore help on this would be helpful.

Bayview3,

I'll take a guess on that first one: Inshore Lizardfish (Synodus foetens), perhaps? Did he look like this: http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/Photos/Pic ... s&TotRec=5

That is the critter. Put up a fight, but with teeth like that, makes you think twice about going in the water without anything protecting toes, fingers, and anything else that might be hanging out.

Thanks,

Every now and again those lizard fish show up at the 206 area. I've caught them near the channel markers in the deeper water.

I caught one of those nasty little guys last week on a live mullet that was of comparable size. It makes you glad that a fish that aggressive doesn't get HUGE.
